Info OS X Lion launch likely next week

OS X Lion launch likely next week, new MacBook Air to follow by Chris Rawson Jul 7th 2011 at 10:30PM

AppleInsider and 9to5 Mac have both received word that Apple is planning an "overnight" on July 13 in its retail stores. Such retail events usually precede major product launches, with store displays being refreshed and managers being trained on the new products. Following the July 13 store refresh, OS X Lion is expected to be released to the general public on July 14.
According to AppleInsider, Apple's retail stores will also be upgrading the RAM in several display units to ensure that Lion demoes smoothly on them. Their source also claims some customers will be invited to come to the Apple Store and download OS X Lion there so they can get on-site coaching on Lion's new features.
The sites also claim the long-awaited MacBook Air refresh will take place soon after Lion's release to the general public, possibly as soon as a week later. AppleInsider had previously reported that the new hardware was ready to go some time ago, but Apple decided to freeze new hardware shipments for the time being so all new Macs could ship with OS X Lion pre-installed.
OS X Lion will be US$29.99 and exclusively available from the Mac App Store. The current developer-accessible version is GM Seed 1.

Been doing a lot of reading up about Lion. At the moment I'm waiting delivery of a 640GB HDD for my MBP and was going to hold off installing it until Lion is released - problem is that if it won't come on a DVD then how does one do a clean install of it?

If this is going to be the way, I guess I could install Snow Leopard to my HDD when it arrives and just do the upgrade when it comes.

Has anyone installed the GM that is floating around usenet at the moment? Got a 640GB HDD waiting to pop in, not sure if I should hold off for the release of Lion or install it with SL and then upgrade... or install the GM? :S

I'd wait for the full release now, and upgrade from Snow Leopard/Mac App store. Actually I'm surprised it hasn't dropped already, everything I read seemed to indicate the 14th which has been and gone. It'll be £20.99 when it does finally drop.

    Maybe this Friday.

How are Apple when it comes to upgrades - does it normally go smoothly, I'd usually do a clean install.

Release confirmed as tomorrow in US, probably will be the same over here. I would post the article but any bloody thing I copy or even type myself on the iPad becomes word wrapped when posted as a new message.

Apple will release OS X Lion, the latest version of its operating system for Mac desktops and laptops, later
    today

Apple will release OS X Lion later today Photo: APPLE

By Shane Richmond, Head of Technology (Editorial)
    7:20AM BST 20 Jul 2011

Lion is the latest update to Apple’s Mac OS X, which first released in 2001. It adds several features to the operating system that were inspired by the iPad, including the LaunchPad, which gives one-click access to applications, and a more gesture-based control system.

Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s chief financial officer, told analysts last night that Lion would be released today.

Mr Oppenheimer and Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, announced record profits during the call with analysts. Apple reached $28.57bn in revenue in the second quarter of this year, selling more than 20 million iPhones and 9 million iPads along the way.

The new operating system goes live now and will cost £20.99. OS X Lion will be available only through the Mac App Store and not available on disk. This is the first time that Apple has released an update to its operating system as a download-only.

Other features of Lion include a system-wide auto-save feature, which means that every app will perform regular background saves, eliminating the risk of lost work, and AirDrop, a simple means of transferring files between Macs.
Two of Apple’s key apps have been updated for Lion. Mail, Apple’s email client, now has improved search functions and an updated format for message threads that breaks the components of a conversation down into simple timeline. Safari, Apple’s web browser, now features gesture-based navigation and a Reading List feature that stores web pages for reading later.

Warning to any photographers, both NIK and OnOne have said that their software plugins will not work on Lion at the moment... It will crash.

No more volume licence, just the one cost.

No need for a key since there is no volume licence, I bought a 5 user version of leopard and even that did not have a key.

That is what i though, Blaggards comment confused me, i though they were going to start charing per machine.

I know that you are supposed to pay per machine but i thought he meant it was going to be like Windows..

This is not the article I originally read but I'm pushed for time, took me all of 30 seconds to find it folks!!!

A Single Purchase of Mac OS X Lion Will Install on ALL of your Macs

    Mac OS X, News - June 7th, 2011

If you have multiple Macs, this may be one of the best and most underrated features of the Mac OS X Lion release: you buy Lion once and you can install it on all of your Macs, no additional purchases are required per machine, all of the downloading and installation is handled through theMac
     App Store.
In other words, for just $29.99 you have an unrestricted personal license for Lion installations on your authorized Macs connected to the Mac Store. Here’s a screen cap from the WWDC 2011 keynote video of when Phil Schiller mentioned this:

This was later confirmed by Apple’s Press Release regarding Lion, but the whole thing largely went under the radar in the barrage of other news about Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, iOS 5, iCloud, and all related things from WWDC.
While the general personal license is very cheap, it is unclear how Lion updates will work for situations where group licensing is required, which is common in the corporate and academic environments, but it’s unlikely a site license would cost just $29.99.
The Mac OS X Lion release date is set for July of this year and will be available exclusively as a download through the Mac App Store for $29.99. Lion Server will be offered as a separate download for $49.99.

Remember that you can only authorise five machines at a time, so in theory it remains that the license is for five systems.

Downloading my copy of Lion now... burning the InstallESD.dmg would allow me to install it onto a new HDD?
