    Question Gold

My mate bought a gold chain for £400 in Dubai a few years ago and had it valued at a grand when he came back. He's just had it valued again at 2 grand. If I want to get a gold chain am I best going to Dubai to get one?! What's the current state of play with this?

I wouldn't bother making a specific trip, just for a chain.

I think the key to this is the time period - gold has gone up massively - if you had bought a block of gold in england a few years ago you could sell it on for a fair bit more now.

With that in mind I think you should be investigating trips to the past rather than trips to dubai!

If you do buy gold as an investment, don't buy items where the labour in creating the product was significant versus the actual value of the gold as when you sell you will only get the weight value back, nothing for the labour.

I had a couple of 22k items from dubai, was a nicer colour than gold I've got from the indian jewelers in southall and gold I've seen from india - I'm not certain if stuff like 9k is even worth purchasing as in investment.

I want the chain for myself, not for an investment. The reason why I asked about going to Dubai is because he apparently got it for less than half price at the time ie it was valued over double within weeks of him getting back. If that's the case I'll nip over and buy two, and sell one when I get back to pay for the trip. Seems too good to be true though?!

Isn't the price of gold the same regardless of the country you are in?

Not at all, in the middle east it is FAR, FAR cheaper! My parents are originally from Iraq, and they had never seen any of the 9k pish you get here, over there it's never less than 18k.

Also, when they used to live in Lybia (back in the 70's), my mum went with a local to the jewlery market and some stuff out there will ONLY be sold to locals. My mum showed my some gold bracelets that are immense, never seen anything like it in my life, only available to the locals and the only reason she got it was because she was with a local at the time.

Can't remember what it cost back then, but valued at rediculous amount of money these days. Over here, gold is considerably more expensive than it is over there.

I have probably posted it here before but a couple of years ago Argos were selling gold chains in a sale at below scrap value, at this time I was living on fuck all so drove around my area buying as many as I could afford with my overdraft, ended up with 5. Waited a few days and sold them to a company in Hatton Gardens for over a £300 profit. Had I held onto them they would have been worth even more but I needed the cash. Don't think Argos will be so stupid again though but worth keeping an eye on their jewellery sales. FYI I had a report back from the company in Hatton Gardens and they confirmed the purity of the gold was as described by Argos, I know a lot of people are sceptical about the quality of their jewellery.

If they describe it at 18k gold or whatever, then it would have to be, otherwise trading standards would be on their backs. I know what you mean about people being sceptical, but they can't sell you something as 18k when it's really 9k. Not like they are some random on a street corner who can just disappear, they are a massive company who would get shafted by trading standards, so why would they risk it.

That's my view on their jewlery. However I don't think I would go there to buy a diamond engagment ring or what-not.

With enough gold I am sure he could pay someone to create a machine just for that purpose!
