Although different manufacturers use the same chipset it is common for some to support multiple displays and others to not. What exact model is it? And have you checked it supports multi display out?
Once connected have you gone into display properties and setup extend my display? Which inputs are you using? Do you know if they are DVI-I, DVI-D etc?
the card is a 2GB Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6970, at mo im trying to connect both with via dvi, it doesnt give me the option to extend as it doesnt see the second monitor at all. keep seeing something called eyefidlty pop up, is this a bit of software i might need?

Assuming this is your card then I see you have the following outputs:
1 x Dual-Link DVI
1 x HDMI 1.4a
2 x Mini-DisplayPort
1 x Single-Link DVI-D
DisplayPort 1.2
Which outputs are you trying to use? Have you tried each monitor independently in each of the two ports you are using to make sure the monitors work, and the cables and ports accept that particular monitor?
If installed, have you opened the AMD/ATi graphics utility to see what options are in there?
Also see if there are new drivers for your card:

the actual card i have is this one. http://internalcomputer.com/introduc...ience.computer (not where i got it) On your photo im trying to connect both monitors via the two bigger connections on top of each other, just the same as i did with the last pc. I have tried both monitors on the top plug, both work but on the bottom one, neither work.
One is dual link DVI-I, the other is DVI-D. I suspect the cable you are using is not compatible with one of those inputs or your monitors are not compatible. Can you post both of your monitor models?
main unit is a aoc 24" http://www.priceofindia.in/Consumer-...d-monitor/427/ and the other is just a old acer al1715 screen, (used for email and irc)
The aoc uses DVI-D but the acer appears to only have a VGA output. Are you using an adapter for the acer? If so which adapter or can you take a photo of the DVI pins?
Strange thing is a DVI-D cable should work in a DVI-I port so it may not be down to the ports, these might just be ramblings due to tiredness
I will revisit this in the morning.

i will post pictures tomorrow after work, thank you for your help
Just taken another look at this, so your card is not a Sapphire, it is a VTX? Is this the exact card?

Does it have 2 or 3 DVI ports as the above link lists 3 but I only see 2.
The link you posted confirms there is 1 x Dual Link DVI-I, 1 x Single Link DVI-D.
I can't find the manufacturers site or a proper product page with downloads but Amazon say:
"Take supreme control of the action on up to six simultaneous displays with AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology."

EDIT:
Here is some BIOS for your card:

If I am correct a DVD-D port will not allow a VGA monitor to work even with an adapter. However a DVI-D monitor and cable can use a DVI-I port so the working port must be the DVI-I dual link port. All DVI cables are DVI-D apparently unless there is an adapter in use.
So it appears it is not the cables/compatibility of the ports and monitors at fault, it must be a setting or hardware failure. I don't suppose you have an HDMI display you can test with? e.g. connect your TV via HDMI to see if dual display works.

i have tested with vga (via adapter) and hdmi with my tv, this i am please to say works fine. with the card out and in good light it would appear that although it has 2 of the same ports on the back, only one is vga (has it stamped next to the top port). i will go and get a dvi-d lead tomorrow and test as there doesnt seem to be any option on converting this port to another vga. Thank you for all you help by the way.
No problem, happy to help. I don't think you can connect VGA (analogue signal) to a DVI-D port, even with an adapter. VGA to DVI-I is fine though.
i have now sorted this problem, evilsatan, thank you for all your input. i went and got a dvi-d lead today, its for dual link, so put that on the bottom port of the card, connected the vga to the top (as it has vga stamped next to it) and now both work. Thanks again
No problem mate, DVI got a bit confusing when they released dual link etc. as some monitors/cables are not compatible. Glad you got it sorted.
