    scam Any big risks involved?

Just making sure on something here that I'm not missing.

Put my MacBook Pro up for sale on Gumtree tonight. Got a call an hour later by a guy about an hours drive away saying he'll take it at asking price... providing I'll accept Santander. I asked my mother in law if I could have it transferred to her account and he is doing that tonight.

When she confirms the money is in her account tonight, I'm going to take the MBP to work tomorrow and he is going to have a friend come and pick it up. With the money confirmed tonight - is everything safe in terms of not losing out on the cash?

Just want to make sure I'm not falling into a well known scam here. The guy tried to neg the price but gave in no problem to my request for the lot.

    Cheers, Chris.

Yeah I would only be taking cash on collection and counting it and checking for fake notes at the time of collection, no rushing if he wants the laptop he waits for you to check every note till your happy.

The suspicion is that they have access to a santander account and they know interbank trasfers are instant send the money to who ever it shows they get the laptop account holder sees money missing and reports the problem to the bank.

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

Mate there's a long ass thread about scamming on gumtree at the moment!

Cash on collection only. If anything doesn't feel right, then pull out of the transaction.

Gumtree is fucked at the moment, cash and check it with a burly mate for backup, as 909 says you won'have trouble shifting it!

m8 whatever you do dont accept payment other than cash on collection, at the minute there are several fraudulent ways being deployed around gumtree and ebay and one big alarm bell is that they want to pay you by paypal or bank transfer even though they are picking it up from you. if he has the brass in his santander account get him to withdraw it

ps santander is a multinayional bank and this has fraud all over it

what they do is sell something on ebay, get paid for it and then get the buyer to pay to your paypal or bank account, they might htink they are getting a car or a pc, you think its genuine, the guy collects and then you find out you both been connec.

NO everything is not safe in terms of not losing the cash - as has been pointed out already (on almost every reply) it does sound very much like you're being scammed - money will appear in your bank account, you'll hand over the goods, the person with the hacked bank account will report the fraudulent transaction, it will be reversed by their bank and you'll lose the cash and your MBP. Even if you withdraw the cash as soon as you receive it, the bank will chase your MiL for it as she'll be liable for it.

Or simply ask him to perform the bank transfer whilst with you at your house. Most banks now use faster payments to BT is practically instant. That way you know he has access to the account and you can verify you have received the dough. I am sure he would rather use cash in this instance as he can't tell if you are logging his bank deets. I wouldn't risk anything on Gumtree, it's a joke of a trading site.

Thats the point tho ES....with Santander newly set up bank transfers are NOT INSTANT!! They take 3 working days.

Faster Payments are used by Santander but only for payments that have been set up and used with no issues previously.

I know cos I use it all the time with my Santander account.

Thinking on it further and relating to the other thread, it sounds like he's trying to cover himself by saying a 'friend' will pick it up.

So if the plod catch up with him and he is identified as the person who picked up the goods, then he can just say 'I'm the innocent party, I had no idea there was a scam, my friend the invisible man asked me to pick it up. Sorry I don't know his name.'

Even cash isn't safe, round are way someone has been buying things saying they be round at about eight, then phoning to say they will be a late, turning up at tenish when it's getting dark. As it's late they want to do it quick, handing over loads of fake twenty pound notes...

if im perfectly honest, if anyone falls for fake notes late at night or takes a bank payment even when the buyer is personally collecting and then gets scammed, its their own fault. some people need to stand back and think for a while.

hint: for a good read on things like this purchase Paranormality by dr richard wiseman. while it is not about this type of fraud etc its does give fascinating insight into why we are blind to certain things or situations.

Its probably some sort of bank fraud coming from a corporate account to yours and will get flagged down the line or something along them lines.

Let him pay for it, when his friend turns up, just play dumb asking what a macbook?

Seriously though it sounds really dodgy. My sister had a car for sale on gumtree for 5k, someone called saying they wanted it and were going to send a cheque, when it cleared he would collect the car, they sent a cheque for £7k, she took it to the bank it was from and the police, they all said it looked fine, I told her something wasnt right, especially that he was paying £2k over. She didnt cash it in the end. Was definately some sort of scam.
