!Correctly implemented I think they work well - have them on my Audi and definitely feel more "visible" during the day. The Audi ones dim when you put the headlights on so your point about glare doesn't really apply.
Some of them are truly ugly though - Citroens spring to mind.m
I think they look OK on cars that were designed to come with them as standard. Retrofit them on a Mk3 Golf or Mondeo and they suddenly look shit.
You can adjust the brightness of them on the Audi's and new VW's via Vagcom too from memory.
Have to admit I'm a fan of the OEM ones - some look a bit strange like the Citroen ones but I love them on the Audi's and VW's.
Years ago I read something that said that having your lights on during the day, whether they be sides or driving lights increased people's chances of seeing you by 40%.
Every time I hear someone moaning about DRLs just proves to me that they're having the desired effect - letting other drivers know you're there.
Really like the look of them on my BMW 1 Series. BMW's angel eyes were the first to make DRLs look cool. They are also required by law on new cars so you better get used to it.
European Union
European Union Directive 2008/89/EC requires all passenger cars and small delivery vans first type approved on or after 7 February 2011 in the EU to come equipped with daytime running lights.[12] The mandate will extend to trucks and buses in August 2012.[13] The EU Directive requires that the DRL function must be produced by functionally specific lamps meeting the requirements of ECE Regulation 87 and mounted to the vehicle in accord with ECE Regulation 48.[14] Functional piggybacking, such as operating the headlamps or front turn signals or fog lamps as DRLs, is not permitted.[15]
If you are unable to see over a ton of metal on the road in good conditions then you should hand in your license and do us all a favour.
If the conditions make it difficult to see a car then they should have their lights on.
Also, they all look shit. Without fail.
Waste of energy more than anything.
I have them on the front of the S-max and they look nice inset in the front bumpers, they don't give any glare at night as they turn off when the main lights come on.
As stated I like DRLs but would just like to add that if you install "aftermarket" DRLs, you are an utter and complete cunt. You're not doing it to be more visible to other road users. You're doing it because you want to be noticed and you fucking know it. Cunt.
Bwahahah, red mist over a fucking bulb!
Peace to all.
DRL's are absolutely fine... if the conditions are overcast, gloomy, rainy etc. etc.. - In general, if, for some people, drivers or pedestrians, seeing shit is just that little bit more difficult.
However if you're driving around with them on during bright sunlight and glorious weather, you look like a cunt.
Even more so are the even bigger cunts like the one I saw only last night driving around in a black lowered transit van with NO headlights OR sidelights on, yet he had his DRLs on. He was a prize winning supernova grade cunt that didn't realise that he was practically invisible because DRL's really do not give enough light on a dark road with street lighting obscured by lots of trees.
Black van + Dark Road + No headlights = sudden death for some poor fucker.
In the same category as the front fog lights on ALL the time (day and night) brigade.
Just back from Canada and its also the norm over there!
But then again those cunts have red rear indicators which is extremely confusing for a poor UK cunt like me!!

had my lights on a few months back. Still the DUMB CNUT in front of me didnt see me when he reversed back for no apparent reason
In Cyprus unfortunately people suffer a lot from an inferiority complex. It's a small place where everyone knows everyone so people here are the most image conscious I've ever witnessed. dpSparhawk, you think that's bad? I saw a cunt here the other night in a black BMW 3-series, with just DRLs and foglights on! How the fuck these people can see anything is beyond me.
Also you see a lot of people with "aftermarket" DRL immitations that look fucking ridicuolous. They literally buy a strip of small white LEDs and have them fitting around their headlights like a fucking Christmas tree and we're not talking old bangers! Seen this on an X3 and numerous nice Audi's ruined because cunts don't have a clue!!!

LOL Cyprus, I can imagine it... I'm sure there are bigger cunts than the guy in the transit I saw
I gotta admit I leave my lights on all the time, having to drive through the Tyne Tunnel a couple of times a day to work and back and to other sites, I find i normally forget to either turn them on or turn them off when driving through, instead i just leave them on all the time with them dipped as to not blind people.
When people have their headlights on they need to learn to use the dipped control.
