    Help 3g usage in US

Am off to US next year for a few weeks and am wanting to be able to use the internet on the go - want to be able to use my SG S2 to get on the internet and to use as a wifi hotspot to get my laptop on the net.

If I use my normal phone contract for data while over there it is gonna cost me loads, what is the best option for me to use while am there?

Can I get a payg sim card with data when I get to the US etc?

Yep, just get an at&t sim card from EBay and buy a data package online, works no problem. I do it every time I go, still isn't cheap though. CHEAPER but not great.

    Thanks to Infinity

Infinity is correct but if you do buy off eBay make sure it's activated and u have all the activation details.as you can't activate them in the uk they need to be activated in the us.

    Thanks to tranit

well with at&t if you do activate in the UK (via the website like i do) - they send you a pincode via sms, which you can't receive unless you're in the US - you need the pincode to access all the relevant account section - also you can't top up your phone without a US address - you'll need to probably go to an at&t store to top up or buy credit over the counter.

You can ring their customer services and top up over the phone but it's a massive ballache because it takes so long.

I'm over now for christmas, and have been looking for an alternative to the rip off t-mobile roaming charges, without much success. I have again gone for a disposable pre-pay tracfone, though my use is for calls only.
When comparing charges though, I did look at data and decided it was just too expensive, im sticking to the wifi in the villa. One particular sim only package I was looking at had data at various price bands....I looked at the UK first (band A), which would have been for an american using their phone over in the UK, and it was $1 per Mb....thought I was on to a winner and assumed the US would be cheaper, until I saw the US was band D, which was an astonishing $15 per Mb !!!!

Thanks for the info, I will find an at&t store while am there and sort some credit. That $25 for 500MB seems decent, a massive saving on what it would cost on my uk orange contract
