I'm seriously considering rooting as I think market access would be brilliant. How much stuff can be installed though ? I'm not expecting high end games etc to work but how much success do people have with general apps from the market - i.e. not converted to BARs and side loaded.

I see the chap that runs the modaco site has bought a playbook maybe see some progress on some new things there ,Im in two minds about rooting I am loving the BB OS and it is doing everything I was looking for it to do, its running ES file explorer android mail and I use it for twitter so may leave as is for now until something matures for it.

ive rooted now and its cool to just access the app store then try loading the app, if it works ill then convert to a bar, just saves time.

bear in mind your sideloading apps, so you launch a droid lquncher then access the app store and load the app from the droid launcher, not the playbook os. its just the emulator emulating the full launcher and app.

also now its rooted ill be able to do all the developements that come out in the following months, which, with the price point of the devices and the fact they have sold out should be loads

Once you put the market on it a good selection of apps download and work, but you need to remember to delete

Despite rarely using my iPad, thanks to this thread, I felt a compulsion to drive 40 miles to CPW to pick up their last one this evening.
Waiting for the initial update to download at the moment.

Downgraded mine to 1.x this evening but ran out of time, so over the weekend I should get the upgrade to 2.x jailbreakable done. Have been trying to do it all in parallels on my Mac which has mostly worked but it's not recognising the playbook anymore in the PC version of bbdm so I think I'll do the rest on my missus' win laptop

I've just taken mine back (faulty speaker) and plumped for a refund instead. It's a beauty of a little thing and the browser was it's best feature - but I found myself returning more and more to my iPad. I think the biggest disappointment for me personally was it's lack of a native YouTube app which allows you to log in and see your subscriptions. I follow a lot of YT channels and it's what I use my iPad most for. The PB browser handles YT vids just fine through it's browser (the app is shite), but as the YT web page does, it defaults to the lowest setting and also shows ads. iPad does away with all this and now YT have changed their layout, it's way too fiddly for a browser without a mouse. No Skype support was a big disappointment I have to admit, and I missed firing up a music/video streaming app that just worked. The Kindle app worked great though and it was a lovely reader. Glad I had a play with it but I think I always knew it was an indulgence more than anything. Just a tad too much on the faffing about side for me.

All these piggin tablets have limitations . Bought my mrs iPad 2 for Xmas. - asked lots of friends who have them about the lack of flash - everyone said no probs. Typically - Mrs orders lots of photos and shit off sites like snapfish & photobox - none of which work with the iPad . So back to the laptop . Infuriating !

Im not too sure mate, will mess around 2nite and see what i can get done, would reckon as long as it gets picked up on your home network and the ps3 id's the playbook i dont see why it wouldnt stream (although i have never tried)
There where talk of the playbook getting dlna certification but have never followed that up.

    Thanks to sparkymf

Only have mine 24hrs, and I only bought it to have a play with rooting , android etc. but to my surprise I find, I left it alone, as I like it just fine as it is.
Like the snappy os which is a rip off Webos, but I like Webos so that's great.
Love the browser which would be my main use, and the pdf reader, epub reader, evernote and media players do pretty much all I need.
So cheers for the heads up "maltloaf", this is my perfect "going to work toy", the form factor suits me much better than my iPad.
