Not long back from Punta Cana in the south of the island. This was the 3rd time we'd been and TBH we didn't go off the complex this time. The only times we went out of the resort the other times was to do excursions (swimming with dolphins/sharks, snorkelling etc) and they are all organised for you so there is no need for bodyguards. That said, off resort looks like a 3rd world country - people living in shanty towns/half built houses etc, roads that are half finished, that sort of shit - so I guess its possible you will have crime associated with that sort of poverty. Never heard of anyone getting themselves robbed or anything, but the hotels do advise you to take organised taxis if you are going shopping off resort. The standard of driving is nothing less than shocking as well, how they dont have more accidents I dont know - worst driving I have ever seen in my life - saw 4 people on a motorbike once!
Enjoy mate, it's a cracking holiday destination and the staff at these hotels are generally pretty good, and for a few dollars of a tip are pretty attentive too!
How about a positive LSD story? Would you like to see a positive LSD story on the news to hear what's it all about, perhaps? Wouldn't that be interesting just once?
"Today, a young man on acid realised that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we're the imagination of ourselves... Here's Tom with the weather".

Haven't been to Dominican republic for a few years now not since having kids I tend to goto good hotels in Egypt or Turkey these days shorter flights, saying that we did used to go twice a year but I have never heard of hiring a body guard, but Dominican republic is like any holiday destination stick to the tourist areas and you will be fine, personally I never found many reason to venture of site / complex except to use the staff ATM or for organised trips, but believe me you will get bothered to fuck walking around any public areas, and they are always trying to fleece tourists on prices..
Usually taxis from the complex can be ordered and the driver will wait at your destination for you to take you back, do not be tempted to use the motoconchos or flag a taxi down at the main roads you are really risking life there, I don't think the notion of a MOT exists and the licence system is corrupt and is just bought or tests taken by relatives..
Watch out for for creamy cocktails they are usually full of coconut milk, drink to many and it will give you a laxative affect, the same goes for eating lots of fried foods because they use coconut oil...
I will try to remember some more later

I've been to Playa Dorada, two weeks all inclusive. We didn't stay only in the resort area though, we moved/walked around as we pleased, night and day in Puerto Plata. Never got any hassle, of course you have people who want your money, but this is typical almost everywhere. It was a good two weeks, and the best New Year party I have experienced to-date.
You asked for "dont's", the first one is "...with the wife", the women there are amazing
“If I asked you to have sex with me, would the answer to that question be the same as the answer to this question?”

I was over there last year and I deliberately avoided the complexes. I stayed in Punta Cana in a rented apartment for a week, and was mixing freely with the locals for the whole time with no issues.
I was actually over there looking at property - my intention was to buy a place a stones throw from the beach - at the time they were costing around $150k for a 2 bedroom apartment. However, after 4-5 days there, I realised there's not much to do apart from drink and sunbathe, so came back to London on the next flight and bought a place here. A bit of a side story there, but the point is I socialised and dealt with locals day and night for nearly a week, and had no experiences I would class as dangerous or even mildly concerning.
Also... watch out for the random girls offering massages. They seem to be everywhere, but you need to be sure you get a good one ;-) First bit of Spanish I learned was 'Massaje completo'. Ahh, memories.
