There is no way there won't be a version with an optical drive.
They would be excluding many millions of customers . Worldwide the infrastructure isn't good enough yet for download only. Rumour is there will be two versions of next 360, stripped down one without optical drive and a fully loaded higher end model.

The sale of tablet devices and the games/apps that run on them would say otherwise. There is a huge market out there and it does not need optical media.

Alot of those tablet games are tiny compared to optical media. There is 0 chance of any next gen console having no optical drive. The infrastruture is not there to support it. Broadband in this country is shit enough, america does not even have 100% coverage.

    Its not going to happen.

I don't see any possibility of download only for this generation, the size of next gen games coupled with broadband speeds and caps make it unlikely.

The next Xbox is rumoured to use bluray. The name Durango is a Mexican city, however some are saying its a play on words and is meant to be "do rango" - we can only hope.

Then I refer to my earlier post - a disc containing the core game engine and 1 or 2 levels of the game only. The rest is made available via online only.

If you look at the next gen tech demo's such as the samartin your gunna need way more than 50gb simply for all the textures and lighting, both i think will use a 6 layer blu-ray or in the xboxs case some hd-dvd hybrid, this will also stop piracy simply due to the amount of space it would take to download and burn 1 game! Pcs would take 5 years to catch up or itd be too expensive

Still think the xbox will be known as xbox infinity, (xbox logo would be windows 8 turned on its side) come with a consolised version of windows 8 installed and be compatible with windows 8 phones, (all by making the infinty hand with the kinect device, possibly as standard)

Both to have about 1tb storage space, and the app store to feature last gen titles aswell as cheap open market games to try and battle the Apple market, both to have free network play and possibly launch or be advertised with the new blizzard MMO

Controllers will be the same for xbox, can see some changes to the ps3 simply as its design has rarely changed for close to 20 years, possibly to add an xbox style trigger as R/L 3/4

Also see which ever console is hacked freely first will be the most popular (most popular consoles, Ps1"most hacked, ps2 most hacked, Ds most hacked, xbox most hacked)

As for the 2nd hand, cant see a company doing anything as it would just alienate the customers and de-value the price of the games, online codes are hear to stay and release date DLC will be even more abundant than it is now!

bah, new gen this, new gen that... its all balls

graphics bet better and the processing required to support the graphics increases, but the games arent any more playable than older consoles.

the snes, PS1/2, the wii.... all great platforms and if ther wasnt a 'newer' version i darent say that we'd still be satisfied with bomberman and mario cart

Your comment about the size of the game content is very valid. Perhaps we will see physical media with 100% of content but that will only be playable after you enter your unique game/box code, just like you do with some titles via Steam's authentication servers. Once that code is used it cannot be used again. So no cheap second-hand games and the publishers finally get what they want.

Braben comes from a time when a pocket change bought a game, he's complaining about the now where a secondhand market that only exisits (as well as piracy) because games cost far too much.

Nobody would bother reselling a 69p, based on app pricing, game, if it was shit you could live with it, a £40 game instantly creates a secondhand market at half that price.

    I hate Braben.

Definately won't argue about the publishers putting pressure on console manufacturers to curtail used games. Good suggestion above, perhaps they will go the whole hog and implement cd keys like pc games. That way a used game would need the user to buy a code on xbl\psn before it can be activated on another console.

With the whole resist 2nd hand that seems to be coming i can honestly see it killing the game industy and we'll end up with a fall like we did with the atari era just before Nintendo issued a new wave!

Personally i dont sell games 2nd hand (dont even buy em) but do buy a helluva lot of retro, all obviously pre-owned, consoles like the Mega Drive, Snes, you can get out of the loft after 15 years of not being used and all it needs is a quick blow and the games work spot on, could you imagine getting a 20 year old xbox 360 out and it even switching on??

I prefer to look at games in renumeration value (something Uncle Mike taught Newcastle fans when buying players) mainly the cost of the product over the lifespan, and how much it'll be worth in a year or so. For example any Fifa 12 id class as £5 simply because in 12months, itll be worth £10, 2 years £3 and in 5 years about 10p. Personally the should just charge £25 for a Fifa subscription!

I honestly think we'll run into a problem, look at how many ps2 games are clogging up charity shops, poundlands, the ps3, wii and xbox sold a helluva lot more! Its going to end up entire landfills full of Fifa

Generally people arent stupid and while either pirate or go elsewhere, give it 2 years and gaming will be dead or solely on phones and facebook!

Imagine Mass Effect 4 for Xbox Infinity, the game disc is the new price of 49.99, with that you get your standard charcacthers, now theres also DLC, 5 new stand alone missions, already on the disc but pulled from the main game, all available for 9.99 each, hence £100 for 1 game, that game you cant sell, cant lend to your brother or mates and will likely be irrelevant in 3 years once they knock the authentication server offline to make way for the even more expensive sequel. No-one in there right mind would do that.

So do you spend £100 on Mass Effect 4 for Xbox Infinity, or do you just get Angry Birds 2 for 69p?

I agree games not evolving as much as I would like (ai specifically) but who would want to play gears or mass effect on ps2 or Xbox 1? I still get a thrill from good looking games and the current gen have plateaued compared to a pc with a decent dx11 card.

O and as for the whole "2nd hand is killing the industry so we include online pass codes to force you to buy new"

Look at Fifa 12, Call of Duty MW3 and Mass Effect 3, they've sold close to 30million combined, times that at an average of £30 per game ur looking at £900m in sales do they really need to sell anymore?

All the stop 2nd hand is greedy directors looking for yet more money!

One thing we can all agree is when E3 comes along it will certainly make us talk more about the new generation consoles. It will also be interesting to see if the specs end up being like what happened last time round with them changing. The rush to market the consoles as well hopefully will not end up in as many different errors and I suspect there will be a lot of people holding back as a result of the errors/alleged dl only etc.
