I haven't but i'm going to try to give some time this year. My Son had to have 3 or 4 blood transfusions plus 2 lots of platelets during his stay in hospital which obviously saved his life. I feel it is now my duty to give some back to help others the same way my Son was helped.

Think I am on to my Gold Card now in donations. I hate needles and can never watch it going in, but it's worth the orange juice and biscuit at the end

Just made an appointment at the next local blood donor thing to go give some - first time for me thought it would be a worthwhile thing to go and do - had been worried that they wouldn't take it or would bin it as I smoke weed but apparently it does not matter

So some poor sod in hospital not only has to recover from surgery but has to do it while suffering from the reefer madness.

I donated for the first time a few years back. Then got a piercing and couldn't go the next time. They never sent me reminders after that. I then moved out of town and I still haven't heard from them; even though I've tried updating my details 4 times.
I am trying to keep an eye on the next one near my town as I'd love to give more. Even if I am common blood type lol

I guess it is the same or not as bad as people who drink alcohol then give blood . . .

I've always wanted too but the fear of them telling me I have AIDS has always stopped me doing it.

96% of us rely on the other 4% to give blood. Please don’t leave it to someone else.

Main site, just put your postcode in and find somewhere you can donate today.

The National Blood Service - do something amazing give Blood

    Who Can Give Blood?

Most people can give blood. If you are generally in good heath, age 17 to 65 (if it's your first time) and weigh at least 7st 12Ib you can donate. You can give blood every 16 weeks, that's approximately every four months.

The National Blood Service - Can I Give Blood

    Whole blood

This is rarely used these days, only really in instances of severe blood loss. It's usually separated into its individual components.

    Red cells

The main function of red blood cells is to distribute oxygen to body tissues and to carry waste carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
These are used in the treatment of all kinds of anaemia which can't be medically corrected, such as when rheumatoid arthritis or cancer is involved, when red cells break down in the newborn and for sickle cell disease.

They're also essential to replace lost red cells due to blood loss in accidents, surgery and after childbirth.

    Platelets

This blood vessel has been cut open to reveal its inside wall (lower left).
Platelets can be used in bone marrow failure, post transplant and chemotherapy treatments, and leukaemia. Platelets can be of huge benefit to the recipient

    Bone Marrow

If you are a regular blood donor please read the following as it gives you some information about donating bone marrow. All you do is give them an extra sample of blood when donating and you go on to the register.

    Organ Donation

Please also consider registering on the organ donation web site.

Maybe my opinion isn't neutral as I don't mind smoking but tbh if I was recovering from something major, I would probably rather be stoned - takes the edge of the pain/discomfort

I was only joking. But what if you got the fear in hospital? That wouldn't be fun...

I also give blood regularly as I've seen how important it is with my son having 5 blood transfusions before the age of 2.

I saw the vans at our town hall this morning so bobbed along and registered with one of the nurses. Hung around a while then had a screening interview with another nurse. Then a third nurse came to tell me I'm a crock and to keep my shitty blood to myself. Gutted.
