I did mine for free, there's an app on the market to do it.

Make a backup of your /efs folder before you start but at least one of the market apps does that for you automatically.

There are a few posts on xdadev about it, worth a read through before you start

cheers malty but if im not mistaken you have to be rooted to use the app dont you? ive not rooted the phone, i do have a couple of android pads rooted, one of which was a ballache, and reading the instructions for the phone its more complicated so i dont really want to bork my phone for a couple of days till i get a chance to put my errors right, which will happen, :-/

Root is a piece of cake. Use odin to flash an insecure kernel, forever after you just use clockwork recovery to flash stuff

cheers mate yup read about the odin thing. as i messed up rooting the pad which is just an nvflash, how hard can that be?, im not even going to take the chance with the phone, might as well spend a few pounds and have no hassle etc! :-/

    Follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1103399

You cannot brick it so don't worry (well you can but not by doing this)

Just seen there is a 1 click method now as well without using odin but as it does not install clockwork recovery you may as well just do the above - it is not hard

    Thanks to prezzy

ok you were all correct! was a breeze the instructions just made it sound complicated!! :-/
couldnt use the unlock that i wanted to so had to use the 'more dangerous' one but it all worked ok!! should i flash a secure kernel back to it now? or will i lose the unlock?

It won't matter what you flash to it now, the unlock directly modifies your efs folder which is why you need the backup as if that folder is corrupt, your imei is lost forever.

Copy that backup to several places, preferably off the device.

Why wouldn't you want a root kernel tho?

cheers Malty, im more concerned about the insecure tag, and the stock ones are secure, is it something i need to not worry about?

cheers for the info on the backup, didnt realise i could lose the imei!! how would i get to the backup that was made and take it of the phone??

Nothing wrong with insecure it just means samsung didn't sign it

If you have a yellow triangle on boot, you can get rid of that with a jig which is a couple of quid from eBay

The backup could be anywhere, some of the apps put it in /sdcard/efsbackup
