Newbie Anyone know owt about wiring/powering ceiling speakers?

moving to a new apartment in a few months and we have the gargantuan task of transforming the concrete shell it is now into a living space. Seems that having a fake ceiling with LED lights and all that shite is the norm here so I was thinking of getting them to fit some reasonably cheap speakers in there while they're at it. Anyone have the slightest idea how this shit works?

I've looked on a few home audio sites but its all a bit over my head and if I spend the time educating myself, its time I should be spent educating myself on other trivial crap, like the kitchen, or work.

I've noticed the ceiling speakers available ont' web have some sort of transformer on them, so its probably not as straightforward as running the wire to an amp and hoping it doesn't explode under the load.

Not sure what your looking at but ceiling speakers are just like any other and wire straight to an amp, nothing complicated about em. If the one's you've seen are self powered then I'd worry about them being on all the time and wasting you money. The only thing I would say is that you will find alot of bad speakers designed for a ceiling. Don't get cheap ones as you'll regret it. I have four Kef ceiling speakers in my home cinema and I paid around £300 each for em. Cheap ceiling speakers really are cheap and you'll get a nasty tinny sound and lots of distortion at high volumes. HTH
You see, TheThingIs, eventually you'll be all right!

I'm sort of under the impression the transformer isn't to power em, but its something to do with reducing/regulating the load when you have loads of speakers powered from the same source. It may be different in your case as you are powering 4, where I'll be powering at least 8, for a guess.

hopefully that link will work, I guess its classed as PA, although I would hope I can wire em as stereo pairs. They wont be fantastic quality, gonna have some proper speakers for the home cinema bizzle.

Ceiling speakers often work at 70V/100V - take a look at this link http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/suppor...=215&doctype=3

I did mine with car speakers, boxed them in between the joists and sprayed the grilles white.. Just fed from a standard amp through a switch/volume box..

    Sound properly good..

    Mike.
