Info BTInfinity Is it Worth It?

    Hey Chaps,

I've finally had enough with O2 and their mince broadband. My speed has dropped from a steady 6mb down 1mb up to 2mb down 350up and appears to be fluctuating between that. I've had several router's to resolve the issue and also had BT out to check my line. The Line itself is only 2years old and is in fine condition.

So, a nice big Shiny BTInfinity cabinet has appeared around the corner from me, checking my speed on there website it says i'll get the full 40mb down and 10mb up because my distance from the cabinet. Now, I know its not going to be that, anywhere near that I'd be happy lol.

Do any of you chaps have BTInfinity? If so, have you experienced any issues? traffic shaping etc

    Any info would be great

If it's a fibre connection distance (within reason) should have little or no effect, typical BT bullshit!. My local exchange is nearby and my building has a direct line (no external chav seat) so with ADSL I was getting the full 24meg from BE, I was with them between 2 stints of Telewest/VM. My exchange has been enabled since very early on yet they have yet to provision any lines to me, even with all the downsides VM are still better than the endlessly incompetent BT.

I doubt they traffic shape as all the deals have a cap anyway.

    Must.... resist.....

Infinity is spot on, and this is only the start. As the network is ramped up. FTTC will become FTTP even for consumer @ 100M up / 40Mb down, and then by 2015 it will rise again to a theoretical 330mb down.
Virgin are panicking and trying to throw bandwidth at their customers in a flawed business model which will see them plummet in the same way C&W did. Good luck hanging on to that horse

good point my FTTC connection has a Max attainable rate of 135M down 39M up now and that's on the 17a profile in the future like you say when they move onto 30a profile more is possible..

Exactly, what a tit! The whole 21CN shit is the nuts.

Virgin are fucked. They have won a shitload of new contracts recently and they dont know what to do. They migrated 5 of my former clients from BT fibre to Virgin Fibre. The fibre has 5 10mb siteson a 1GP Fibre connection, which should be fine right? NO!!!! The link started to flap straight away. They blamed it on dirty fibre, when everyone in the loop knows its congestion. End result? All migrations on hold due to investigation lol.

    People on virgin watch out.

I have had it for a bout 2 months now. Download speeds greatly increased and uploads much much quicker.
I didn't need to upgrade, it was the only way to get them off my back trying to sell it lol.

    But happy with it here.

Infinity is excellent - I'm near the green box - which is the dominant factor in speed for this service as it's fibre to the green box in the street then ordinary twisted pair to house .
Get full 40mb down 9.99 up all day long and bt removed the download cap last year (was 100gig then 400gig month) and it's now truly unlimited .
I don't use torrents so I cant comment on that but newsgroups work perfectly , no shaping at all .
I honestly thought bt were shit - I ditched them years ago - but infinity is great.
Had it since jan 11 btw

    Thanks to braymond

Thanks for the feedback chaps, gonna bit the bullet and move. Not a big downloader anymore to be honest, the odd weekly show/movie but those are few and far between these days.

I've heard that they throttle speeds in evenings and at weekends? Also, how long does migration normally take? I use my connection for work so can't afford to have it down for too long. Red Phoenix, have you had yours installed? What are your thoughts so far?

I can tell you that they definitely do not throttle newsgroups at all.
    Torrents no idea

Torrents do get throttle 247 but just setting a port above 60000 gets round that, migration was easy engineer rang me at 10:00 told me my line would go off in the next 10mins guy came round 20 mins later and he had left by 11:00 all done..

I have never noticed any other mythical throttling that people seem to bang on about...

This thread is making me consider ditching virgin 20MB (soon to be 60MB) broadband. Definitely unlimited?
BT put down the fibre outside my house last weekend.
    Need to calculate costs.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I just called o2 to get my MAC code. I have never had a problem with them. I consistently get 14-1500kb/s with them. I am paying £18/m and I told them I am considering BT Infinity. They said they can do my existing package for £8.75/m (for 12 months) and chuck in a Thompson wireless N router.

I think it is a good deal. What do you think?
