    Photos Fibre broadband - Throttling/capping

After looking at the new sky fiber service, I am considering my options with getting fibre optic broadband.

Ive always stuck with sky unlimited 20mb service as I get about 10mb consistently with no slow downs etc and do a fair bit of downloading on usenet.

both BT and Virgin are in my area, sky have no clue when they'l be updating to my exchange.

So basically i was looking at BT infinity and Virgin 100mb service

    My main concern is throttling/capping.

I download a fair bit (some months more than others) - but I'm worried that from fair usage policy my speed will go right down (under 10mb), then the upgrade would hardly be worth it.

    From my current understanding

BT Infinity option 2 - is totally unlimited with no fair usage policy
virgin 100mb- is throttled during evenings

I am considering getting BT infinity because I can't see anything on throttling etc about the service (nothing recent anyway), can anyone confirm?

Adsl2 attenuation has no bearing what so ever on vdsl2 speeds it's all about distance from the cab I'm 300 - 350m from the cab and get full 80/20 sync where as I got 3mbs on adsl2

I can vouch for this as as well, I was getting 6 down and 1 up on ADSL2 and now getting 58mb down and 14mb up. I'm just over 300m from the cabinet

My blisteringly fast 6Mb broadband connection just got kicked into touch.

I phoned Sky complaining that FTTC has been available on my exchange since February. The phone monkey said they don't know if they will be able to activate Sky Fibre for my area any time soon, perhaps as late as August 2012. My contract with Sky is up at the end of May, so I'm keeping the Satellite service for know (I dont want to start a new contract) and dumping the phone and broadband.
I may switch to FreeSat if it becomes too much.

Switched to BT Infinity Option 2 (19Mb/58Mb), who've said I'll receive the Modem in the post over the next 5 days and be enjoying 50Mb broadband by the weekend! Woop!
I'm doing before and after Speedtests too.

    Before -

You should ask to speak to the sky fibre team

I did do, but they can't provide my area and couldn't tell me when either.
BT said I'll have it by the end of the week and my bill has dropped too. Result.

Just paying Sky for my TV at the moment, which I might consider dropping too if I can find a decent alternative.

If you folks really believe that BT won't throttle you are in cloud cuckoo land. . . . . . .
    If at first you don't succeed.....redefine success. . . .

They do throttle P2P but that's it at the moment. They haven't managed to do to news groups yet because I'm pretty sure it would effect your standard internet connection and with the infinity 2 unlimited with no FUP that would be in direct violation of your agreement with BT.

Again, I say " At The Moment " but its only before time before a fibre company removes throttling and then everyone will as people will start jumping ship to these un-throttled providers.

They WILL and not before the end of most peoples contracts, VM have been getting away with it for years and BT historically are venal scumbags who still have the monopoly mentality inherited from when they were just that. If I ever actually ge the option I may well go for Infinity just because of the upload speed and advantageous pricing structure available in the early days, being in South London of course that is sometime never. . . .

Unfortunately BT does have a 'get out of jail free card' in their T&C's.

    Changing your BT service

    Changes we may make
    1. Occasionally, we may have to interrupt the service. If we do so, we will restore it as quickly as we can. We may also make minor changes to certain technical specifications, including limits for transferring information which are associated with the service. We may also change usage allowances.
Although it's unlimited now, once their service gets more popular or faster speeds become available, as blaggard pointed out, they WILL change it. Once they have you on the Hook!

But 'shaping' my 50Mb BB is far better for me than shaping my 6Mb BB!!
