BBC News Roberto Martinez offered Liverpool manager's job - Dave Whelan

    Wigan owner
Dave Whelan believes Roberto Martinez has been made an offer by Liverpool to
    take over as manager.

Martinez broke off from his holiday in Barbados for talks with the Reds and
Whelan says he now wants his manager's future resolved by next Thursday.

"He had a meeting on Thursday with the owner of Liverpool in Miami," Whelan
told BBC Sport. "I think they have made some kind of offer.

"They will speak again on Tuesday. I've said I want a decision by Thursday."

Liverpool have declined to comment on Whelan's claims.

Martinez received permission to speak to the
    Reds last week
and was previously handed a deadline to sort his future of 5
June by Whelan, which the Latics owner now appears to have brought forward.

The Spaniard, who met with Liverpool's American owners Fenway Sports Group in
the United States, returns from his holiday on Tuesday.

Whelan revealed: "We are having a meeting on Tuesday when he's going to put
everything to me. He's very honest. He arrives back in the morning and we will
    get together in the afternoon."

However, Whelan insisted it is by no means certain the 38-year-old will
accept the offer to take over at Anfield.

"I think Roberto has put his cards on the table and said 'If I'm going to
Liverpool I want the following'," said the Wigan owner.

"Roberto has to run the football club from top to
bottom. Without that I don't think he would go.

"I should not be saying how good Roberto is because I want to keep him.
There's no question he's the best young manager in Europe."

Asked about the prospect of Martinez taking over at Liverpool, Reds skipper
Steven Gerrard said: "We'll have to wait and see. It's news for me. I am aware
Roberto Martinez has been speaking to the club. If he is the manager he has my
    support."

Ajax manager Frank de Boer and Swansea's Brendan Rodgers
have turned down the chance to speak to the Anfield club.

Former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is among a host of other potential
candidates that have been linked with the vacancy.

He had a great last 10 games for Wigan, moving to Liverpool the pressure will be higher me thinks and the owners wont be like Dave Whelan who loves him unless the results are right.

    Your thoughts?

    Whelan is a bellend.

But if he is to be believed then I don't think a manager with the statue of Martinez should be telling a club like Liverpool that he wants full control...The owners have made their bed now they have to lay in it.

I don't mind Martinez seems a decent bloke and his teams however shit have always played decent football, and he will be given support by the fans should he take over but if it starts going pear shaped I'm not sure how long that will last before the Benitez chants begin.

    Thanks to B.I.G.

How is any manager supposed to last if the fans are always calling for someone else?
Liverpool want instant success. It isn't coming (probably). There is a lot of work to do. They should have given Kenny another season.

I agree completely but sadly thats the nature of the beast nowadays.

The owners have shown the fans that anything less than top 4 isn't good enough so if Martinez (should he take over) does not produce instant league success (I find it strange to class success as finishing 4th but hey ho) then the fans will be on his back. It's not Martinez' fault if this happens but as BBK said he hardly has the best record as a manager and it's a big gamble appointing someone like him as opposed to just leaving Kenny in charge for at least another year or bringing Benitez in.

Not all Liverpool supporters expect instant success hence many of us wanting Dalglish to be kept on but it seems the owners do.

That said whomever steps in will recieve my support

    Thanks to B.I.G.

Ok i've got my composure back now... a little. The owners seemed to be put off the idea of bringing back benitez, whether its bad press or the Hicks/Gillett fiasco. Plus you can see why they wouldn't want to listen to the fans for a second time due to Dalglish not hitting their targets etc.
So it looks like they will follow their original plan of having a young manager that plays a continental style passing game (which they stated in their first interview).
Which im all for but its going to take a long time.

So Martinez it is! He will be a gamble but it could pay off.(fingers crossed)
Not a single fan will be against Martinez when he is appointed. But he will be judged on results from the start just like any manager at any club. We spend more money than everyone else now bar Chelsea/city, so a real battle for top four is a realistic achievement.

Just trying to get my point across below...I love tradition and the new kit looks good. I feel Liverpool follow tradition a bit too much. Were built like an old massive barn. Now if we can convert that barn to look authentic on the outside but modern in the inside then we will start going somewhere. For an example: I don't no what the owners have done with certain back room staff already. I know some have been sacked but i think we need to sack the scouts too and hopefully we've already cleared out all the old fashioned thinking staff that are unable to adapt to modern football. It seems we listen to people such as john Scales, alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson too much? I don't mind having people such as Jaimie Redknapp and John Barnes giving input as its normally correct/modern. But even though the others are ex footballers they have really lost touch with the game.

Last thing... If Joe Cole and Aqualani are not given a chance then not only does roberto not stand by his style of play (as they are two perfect matches) but the old advisory staff are still there. They are two of our best players when in form. The ability is there but its robertos job to get the best out of them.

I thought the scouting system in place now was what Benitez set up before he got the elbow?
