I have a Note 2 and a Galaxy s3 LTE and I must say that the S3 is the best all rounder,as much as I love the Note2 the S3 seem's to be perfect!

Does anyone know, if I follow this procedure using these files on 4.1.1 if it'll work?

Looking at the screenshot linked below, at the moment I just want to root so I can remove the Samsung apps - but would like the option of firing on a custom rom sometime in the future - which option would I choose?

Should I backup my current state first?

You can use option 1 just to root. Or Option 4. They are just different ways to root. Option 2 is rooting and then adding busybox. Option 4 is adding all the above and then Clockworkmod. I think I used option 3.

You still use ODIN and the custom files. But it is a painless guide to help you through. You don't NEED to back-up your phone. But a backup is always a good precaution to take. You'll still be rooting it the same as everyone else by using ODIN and PDA files... etc.. But the toolbox takes you along every step.

Although this is for the US version, this may help -

Is it possible to get online banking apps to work once rooted? That's the only reason I haven't done mine yet.

Natwest works fine on mine. Always did. The only time it sort of didn't, was when I had Jellybean and the Natwest app wasn't supporting any jellybean phones, official or roms. I just took the apk from a back-up I did while on ICS. Stuck that on. All worked fine..!

Can't you guys just do your online banking through the full website for respective banks instead of using the Android apps ?

You can. I don't actually bank on my phone. I use my laptop. But if I need to move some money between accounts or check a balance, or transaction, the app is far easier. I only have to type a 5 pin code, instead of the greater security on the full website.

I know it's a bit of a pain but you could always flash back to ICS until it's compatible with JB.
