Can I ask what's so good about them? I have just renewed with my current provider who charge me £20 a year but I'd like to know what, if anything, I'm missing.

its about $6 a month for unlimited sites, databases and unlimited traffic. not once had a problem with them and i did have a problem moving a script from one host to hostgator and for the life of me i was stuck on one big part. their support fixed it in 5 minutes for me.

Same here hostgator fixed one of my sites that had got infected by some rouge code.....my fault for nicking a bent wordpress theme btw.....But anyway the support over there did a scan on my site for me and kindly removed the offending code. Taught me to be more careful lol.

+1 for their support. I was having a hard time setting up a cron job to backup everything and ftp it to my server at home. The support guy was extremely patient especially considering the problem was in fact me being an idiot.

Best money I've spent on webhosting. No downtime, too many users connected etc

Only dealt with hostgator once but was impressed.

My next door neighbour asked me to help him with his online business he's trying to set up - looks like he's bought some shitty s/w that automates building a site for you and promises loads of commission - doubt it will actually do anything worth talking about.

Anyways, I determine the fault is almost definitely with the s/w so my neighbour suggests calling support - I assumed he meant support for the s/w but he called hostgator - the fella there checked out loads of stuff and was polite, knowledgable and helpful - if I was him I would have told us to go to the people who made the s/w, but the hostgator guy seemed happy to answer all my neighbour's crazy questions and was happy to stay on the line until my neighbour ran out of shite to ask.

I've been with Liquid web since around 2001. Modshack was using them at the time and I signed up using an affiliate link. At the time they were good value for money, but when compared to some of the hosting providers out there now they are quite expensive. So I am going to change, and Hostgator looks good. And if it helps someone here then even better.

Got a small number of sites hosted on there but not using a fraction of my allowance. Got the profesional hosting for $24.99 a month. the only really important web site I have on there is for a friend of mine who sells custom made guitars. He got a customer in the netherlands to create the site. Will have to check out what is involved in moving it to Hostgator before making the move as I don't want him to have any downtime. His domain name is parked with UKreg and is forwarded to a subdirectory on Liquidweb. Maybe Det or someone could advise me or test the site on Hostgator before I sign up. In the meantime I will also contact the guy who put the site together to see if he can foresee any problems. I doubt there will be any because it is a small and relativly simple site but some of the paths, etc. may be different. I know he uses perl and sql but not sure if there is any other requirements. the site is; http://www.atlas-customguitars.com/

Liquid web decided in 2000 they didn't like the content on my forums (probably a complaint from Sony) and pulled my account, fair enough but they then refused to give me the database saying it was already deleted, I had a backup but was a real pain in the arse as it was a week old and I had no warning just gone one day without even letting me know why or shit, I have found over the years you deal with an American company and are not American or based there they treat you like a cunt.

When you set up with host gator or any host you'll create your subdirectory to add his site into. There will be a way to access that location via the ip address. All you need to do is change the hosts file on your pc to point to that ip and when you enter the domain name your computer will point to the new site, install all files and check everything is working fine, when its working fine log into the domain name control panel and update the nameservers to point to your host gator nameservers and you should have no downtime when the change takes place, normally 2-24 hours. This works fine for servers so see no reason why it won't work for hostgator.

On second thoughts that may not work on shared hosting. Maybe ask hostgator support or if you want send the files over and I'll check it on my hostgator to see if it works and is possible to do that way.
