Tech Virgin Media 'Super Hub' - WTF

    Hi all,

I've done a quick search and couldn't find what I wanted - hope someone can help or share experience.

Since I had an upgrade from 10Mb to 60Mb with Virgin, they took my old hardware and left me a behemoth 'Super Hub'. Apart from it being too big for the shelf the old stuff sat on, I must say I'm more than concerned at the frequency of it's failure. Intermittent wireless dropouts and total freezes are a regular occurrence.

Have I got a duff one, or have others had this problem? I'm at my wit's end with Virgin Media and their 'customer support', they are thick as two short planks.

Anyone know of any firmware upgrades that might make any odds? I'm going to keep an eye on the uptimes and make notes to throw at them the next time I feel like a rant.

Not sure if it helps but.

Had same thing for couple of months .
Broadband would stop working then start up for couple of days then stop again.

Virgin came round checked signal etc
Was done to the upload signal being to high ( power was over 58.4dBmV)
Anything over 53 and the signal will drop

Not sure if it helps but it was the problem with mine

    Thanks to ethanhawk

If its a wireless issue you can put the superhub into modem only mode and use your old router.

I've read a lot of people complaining about the super hub but I must say that mine has worked perfectly since I got it.

Mine was a bit iffy during the first few months but seems OK now. My biggest gripe is the wireless signal, its simply shite and I can't get a signal in every room. This is due to the fact they installed it right behind my TV....

Superhub is utter garbage, I can only get a signal of 1 bar on my iPad upstairs. But I can get my Neighbour 2 houses away perfectly at full signal.

Tried everything and came to the conclusion the superhub is a pile of shite.

Will be leaving virgin and going else where shortly. Customer service is a joke.

I upgraded from 10mb to 100mb recently and I got the superhub installed.

As soon as the engineer left I was barely getting 20mb. CS kept saying it was a problem with my laptop.

So after searching online and playing around with the settings I found the following settings improved my speed but the wireless signal strength is pretty poor:

    Wireless Network
    802.11 mode: upto 145 mbs
    802.11N Band: 5GHz

    Content Filtering Services
    Firewall Features Untick
    IP Flood Detection Untick

I had simular issue with the superhub.

I think the main issue is that they been sent out all over the place, all set with the same wireless frequency. This is obviously going to interfer with other identical boxes.

Simply change your wifi channel... it worked fro me

yeah i had the same issues mate, basically both devices in the superhub (modem and router) draw power from the same source which basically means that they hamper eachothers performance, so as I found and most have found is to ensure that you turn off the router option and turn it into a modem only. You can then connect up your old router, but what I would say before you do that is check that your wireless router can handle your maximum connection as i believe that some routers kinda top out at the 50meg connection, so you may need to get a newer router to maximise your new connection speed. but i am just getting this info off a friend who read through a load of forums where people were having the same problems as us.

Mines is six months old now and lives behind the couch - never missed a beat. Transfer speeds over ethernet are great too. Perfect signal on iPhones and iPads no problem.

5Ghz will give you less wireless range than 2.4Ghz. Typically the higher the freq, the lesser the range so 5Ghz signals won't penetrate walls/objects as well as 2.4Ghz. It shouldn't make a massive difference in a home environment, but it does, as the wireless capability of the superslug is so wank. You can even be in line of sight. I'm in the room directly above the slug and have two bars on an iPad. U t t e r shite.
Believe everyone when they say if the slug is giving you problems, buy a decent router and put the fucking thing into modem mode and all will be well again.

    Thanks to Zoots

Try this, it worked for me.
    From virgin forum
    open a webbrowser
in the address bar at the top where it says http://www.
clear the bar so its blank
    and type 192.168.0.1
    username:admin
    password:changeme

    click advanced settings
    then wireless settings
    change encryption to wpa2-psk(aes)
change channel to anything apart from 1/6/11(try multiple channels if still slow) ( I switched to 10 and hadn't any prob since)
    and last but not least
    change mode to 145.
    click apply

    Worked for me.

Tbh I never really had any problems with mine, signal strength was as strong as my draytek which is sat next to it. I went for the modem only mode more for the control than anything else, must have just dropped lucky with it!

Cheers Zoots. I've tried the superhub in modem mode with two routers and i'm getting worse speeds. The routers that I have tried are a Linksys WRT54GX v2 and a Zyxel NBG334W.
