Unlocking 3GS

Hi folks

Mate at work has a 3gs here at work locked to vodafone. Its a clean never jailbroken phone on 5.1.1

Can we unlock it easily for any network? Do I have to Jb it first?

I've no idea what the best up to date method is for this, I've JB'd my own phone but thats about it.

If it was contract and now the contract has expired then Voda will do it for free. If it was/is PAYG then Voda will do it for £20. This would be my recommendation as you can mess around with the software and it will always be unlocked.

Alternatively Redsn0w has been updated to downgrade from iPad baseband, I haven't tried it yet but this method will require you to upgrade to iPad baseband and then downgrade, jailbreak and install ultrasn0w to unlock. The jailbreak and ultrasn0w would be required each time you restore the software.

Apparently was his wife's phone but now she has upgraded - will they unlock it then ? She is still a customer .

Yes of course, my o2 contract had ended months ago, i phoned them up asking for an unlock code, it took a week for the email and instructions.
