Bit of help xvid to dvd

hi guys strange problem i been using svcd2dvd for years all of a sudden its encoding the video at a low bitrate i have been through all the options even used differents sources but still the same only using half of the disk,, time to try a new program, can anyone suggest one that will simply convert an avi and convert it to a dvd, i have googled it and yes there are loads out there but ideally can anyone recooment one that is free also, dont mind paying if i have to i paid for svcd2dvd.
it is a strange problem a normall 700meg avi will fill the disk up now it isnt and it comes out shitty

good bit of kit But it dont do MKV yet..i used it before mkv came out & had no problems with it.

When i can't be arsed setting up Cinemacraft i sometimes use gordianknot to make avi's from dvd's didn't realise it could make dvd's from avi's lol

i use WinX DVD Ripper Platinum

doom9 has loads of freeware stuff for ripping and converting etc.
