    Help Home Network

Hi bit of advice required if I may, I guess like many people I have a bitty set-up at home couple of PC's, Laptops, ATV2, satellite box tablets and phones currently pretty much everything is stored on a desktop machine in the office. I'm now looking at sorting out a small network its main use will be for sharing media and filestorage nothing too excessive, photos and downloads question is what's the best route have been looking at a ReadyNAS but noticed I can get a HP microserver for £120ish once the cashback is claimed, I've been faffing around with hardware for years now but never actually tried to set up a network other than when we all used to drag our PC's into a room to play Unreal Tournament a while back!

Question is what's the better route here for what I want?

    What software is needed etc?

    Cheers

    Iv got the microserver.

    It runs Windows home server.

I just chucked a load of disks in it with raid for backup. Shared the folders that I wanted the other devices to see. I can now view the shared folders on any device that on my wifi.

I also stuck a HDMI card in it and Its now connected to my TV. So I can watch all my movies, or veiw my photos, music etc on the telly. To view them on the TV I use xbmc, and my smart phone can be used as a remote control.

If you want to go even further install sickbeard, sabnzb and couch potatoe on it, and you will be able to make the thing download stuff for you without you ever lifting a finger. (IE I tell it I like a programme, and it just keeps downloading them when they air)

    I have gone for:

ReadyNAS NV+ (4x 2TB drives, 5.5TB usable space, rest is redundancy)
    24-Port Switch
    Cat6 Cabling through the house
    Original Xbox's / Raspberry PI's

I cant comment on the Microserver as i have never used one (but have heard good things) but the ReadyNAS has been a great little investment, im able to stream 1080p movies around the house with this easily, was using original Xbox's with XBMC4XBOX on them but im now moving to Raspberry PI's as they play more HD content.

    method:
Copy all media to the nas, share the folders, connect all your network up, add the Video locations to XBMC and your away
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 and a N40L microserver. My media runs from the ReadyNAS (you ideally want an x86 version which is expensive so 40L would be the cheaper option) as I bought that first but if I had to pay full price I would have gone for the N40L. The microserver requires more experience and time to set up but it is more versatile and can run more stuff if you wanted it to.

yes i forgot about this, if you did decide to go for a readynas, ensure you get an x86 one as a few limitations have cropped up with other processors

Cheers all went for the n40l, works out at £120, and seems to offer more than ready as' tempted to hide it in the lounge depending how noisy it is and connect it to the TV with xbmc on there with a whs install on it that or it going in the loft..

I think that's once you get £100 cash back from HP.

£220 directly from Amazon, £120 after £100 cashback (assuming Amazon are part of the deal, check this yourself):

Cheers lads, brought it from Amazon.

To get the cashback make sure you buy it from Amazon.co.uk and not through a reseller on the Amazon site.

I must have got the last one from Amazon, as only resellers are shown now.

Looking forward to receiving it and having a play around.
