    Help external audio interface ?

    Hey all ,

    Ok I got 2009 iMac , and a pair of M-audio BX8a active speakers

The speakers have these connections on the back
XLR balanced and 1/4" balanced/unbalanced inputs

whats the best piece of kit for hooking my iMAC upto them ?

Will I need and external audio interface , or could I just run a stereo to mono headphone splitter out and into the
    speakers ?

    Any help appreciated

I'm a long standing M Audio interface user but I have to say these speakers get terrible reviews, not for sound quality but reliability. That said an Audio interface will make best use but Core Audio on the Mac is pretty high quality AND quiet so your best choice UNLESS you plan to be doing lots of recording , just use the 1/4' jack input and start with your out put on the Mac set at its lowest increasing carefully. It will take both balanced and unbalanced inputs so impedance should not be a problem.

You only really want an interface if you plan to be RECORDING Audio, then a basic M Audio interface will set you back about 70+

    sounds like a 3.5mm jack to 2 x mono 1/4" I think

You just need a 3.5mm stereo jack to 1/4 ich jack plug lead, I looked at the manual earlier and the speakers have Balance XLR socket and 1/4 inch jack socket which takes balanced or unbalanced, no phono from what I could see
