    Default Wi-FI Slow as shit.

100mb virgin connection at the front of the house (new extension). The speed is perfect when my laptop is patched in. However as soon as i jump on the wifi the speeds are around 15-20. Now i assumed this would be due to the neighbour also having VM so i fired up Inssider, saw what channels were free and switched. No change in wireless speed. Put it on wireless N, no change. Went through all the wireless frequencies and no change.

So i thought fuck this and bought a netgear wnr2000 because it was cheap (I know it cannot do the full 100mb but the wireless signal/strength this gives is alot better, also was told it was a v2 so i could put dd-wrt on it but its a v1) However this also resulted in no change of wireless speed. Fired up Inssider and flicked through all the available channels on B/G/N and no difference. I even got a 10M patch cable and patched the netgear in the next room to see if there was interface going on (next room is behind a brick wall and its empty) and no change! Ive tested the speeds on my iphone, 2 work laptops (Wirelessly and patched in) all of them have been aprrox 10-15cm away from both routers.

    Any ideas?

I'm sure Wireless N to run at it's full potential needs Channel Bonding.

Getting 15-20Mb on a standard Wireless connection is pretty good!
To make the most of Wireless N, you have to enable it both on the router and Laptop's Wireless adapter. Some do not do it due to incompatibility with older devices that do not support Wireless N.

I tried a while back, but it penalised the kids Blackberries and the wife's old phone, so had to revert back.

I was playing with the bonding with Inssider. No difference except in my bedroom (could get a full signal as opposed to half on b/g) Im not happy paying for a 100mb line with only 25mb on wireless thats a loss of 75%. Thank fuck this isnt a job lol.

This has got me absolutley stumped. There is nothing in that front room except the main fuse box, tv, ps3 and qnap. No video / Audio senders in the house or cordless phones.

    Default Wi-FI Slow as shit.

Do either of the routers run dual band simultaneously? If so have you tried the 5ghz channel? This of course assumes your devices can use 5ghz.

I've got an apple airport extreme which will do this. I seem to get better throughput on the devices that can use the 5ghz frequency. Ie iPad, MacBook, dell laptop. Also means less draw on 2.4ghz when using, Xbox, iPhones and netbook which can't use 5ghz.

The problem with 5 gig is lack of penetration, I'm getting about 32 on my iphone, ipad and Sony Tablet S by using a D Link directional aerial on one of my DIR 655 3 antennas.
I stopped expecting much from WiFi years ago, it's shite.

Ive just got 60meg Broadband and I just accepted that on WiFi its going to be around the 30meg tops and I'd have to wire it in if I wanted the full speed.

    I read the following the other day when investagating some wifi issues i have at work;

'Most 802.11n products will knock your throughput down by up to 80% if you use WEP or WPA/TKIP security. The reason is that the 802.11n spec states that the high throughput rates (link rates above 54 Mbps) can't be enabled if either of those outdated security methods are used.'

    Have you tried without security?

Is the laptop your using only limited to 802.11g/b.
If so, your limited to what you get already and it'll never get any quicker unless you replace the internal Wifi card with a better 802.11n one.

Check it's details in Device Manager.

Im using an old HP6400 which is Wireless G so at the very best i'll get 54mbps, factor in the SuperHub is installed behind the telly etc then i'm getting around 30meg tops on it. Sure it would be different if I was using Wireless N.

Just a quick update. I ended up buying Devlo 500mb homeplugs which gives me 40Mb upstairs which is perfect for everything i need (streams 1080p from my qnap flawlessly). Its not perfect but it will do till i can be bothered to rewire the coax round the house.

Quick tip, do not buy any branded 200mb homeplug as they all have 100Mb ports (The 200Mb speed is the link speed between the 2)
