    Attention Backup MX services

I have a exhange server that is using the pop3 connector currently and we are looking to switch over to SMTP.

It's only a small business server so nothing to major required. Anyone recommend a good backup MX online service that i could use for protection if i have server outages.

Would it not be beneficial to use the pop accounts as your fail-over. I know it means double administration for adding email accounts both in active directory and online, but it works quite well for me.

add both MX records for your pop3 mailserver and you exchange server. just make sure the exchange server priority is set lower than your pop3 mailserver.

    Example
    Host: exchangeserver.net
    Type: MX
    Priority: 05
    Mail Server: mail.exchangeserver.net

    Host: pop3mailservers.net
    Type: MX
    Priority: 10
    Mail Server: pop3mailservers.net

The lowest priority value will accept mail first unless its unavailable then fail-over to the next

I'm guessing you have some kind of anti spam setup for your exchange.

Problem is if you use a backup mx, pretty much anything it sends to you will be trusted so you need to consider antispam for the backup mx as well.

Then think how this fits in (or maybe doesn't) with your main exchange/anti spam setup.

I remember I put together a custom solution for someone to cut down his spam and was baffled at first how loads of shite was coming through till I checked the logs and saw it was nearly all coming from the backup mx. I just got rid of the mx record for the backup mx - most properly configured servers will retry for some period of time before generating a ndr.
