Advice A quick question but a long one!

At home we have virgin b/b 10meg, when we had it installed they supplied a Netgear WGR614 router which works fine.

I let my kids use my usenet account to d/l films, music, tv progs ect.... now one of my sons hammered it 24/7(almost) which caused lag when my other son was trying to play Xbox live and talk to his mates so I got a free usenet account which only allows 1meg d/l speed and changed the account on my sons laptop so he couldn't hammer it any more and leave band width for us all(and changed my password so he couldn't use mine any more).

No what I am thinking of doing is to buy a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND to use IP Qos to allow him to use my usenet account again(as the free account is down a lot)and to limit his band width to 2meg, the only thing is that it's easy for him to change his wireless IP settings from a fixed IP to a auto assign IP address so he might get pass the IP Qos.

So Can I keep the Netgear router and plug it in to a LAN port on the TP-Link Router and will I be able to limit the speed on that LAN port to 2meg and then my son can use the Netgear wifi?

The rest of the family will use the wifi on the TP-Link.

Sorry for the long winded question.

How does he download? If he uses Sab and sends his files there automatically you could set a schedule on his Sab to limit speed at certain times then enable a login to Sab so he can't change it.

if not I am sure DD-WRT will allow bandwidth management so get a cheap DIR-615 and flash it so he can use that network. Or you could get a router which allows different SSIDs or bind to MAC then use bandwidth management, I have upgraded my ADSL to a Draytek 2830 at home which does all this but a cheaper DSL model will do it too.

    Thanks

I want a system that he cant tamper with so IMO it needs to be router based.

Would it not be easier and cheaper to just tell your son the rules and if he doesn't stick to them then he gets no downloads?

    Thanks to rIKmAN

Assign the Laptop's MAC address the fixed IP Address from the router.
That way he can't change it. If he does, it just wont connect at all.

Of course, the router needs to have this feature...?

    --EDIT
"Setup Access List" allows Mac filtering, but looks like you cannot assign an IP Address to a Mac using your router - must be time to tell VirginMedia you need their newer one - that's also Wireless N

Thanks for the answers but no one has answered the question yet.

If I buy a D-Link DIR-615 and plug it in to a LAN port on our Netgear can I cap the bandwidth on the DIR-615?

Or if I buy a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND and plug our Netgear into one of the LAN ports can I cap the bandwidth on our Netgear?
