Quick update, the customer gave me permission to wipe the HDD so I ran Disk Utilites, deleted the 'Untitled' partition, set the HDD to 1 partition, Mac OSX Journaled and installed using the original CD that came with the Mac. Upon reboot just sits at the Apple logo with spinning wheel, no 'no access' logo now.
I reset the NVRAM again and this time must have done it successfully as the chimes now make a noise on boot but still no boot. I reset the SMC following Apples instructions online, no indication it worked other than the power light on the charger went off but still no boot. In single user mode now and going to run fsck -fy failing that will run hardware tests and then have a rethink...
Boot verbose and I get:
launch_msg(): Socket is not connected

BootCacheControl: Could not create temporary playlist file: No such file or Directory
