Software for Customer Information and Appointment Reminder

Hi guys,

my father in law has asked me to find him a system he can use for storing his patients details (he's an optician) and can also be used for sending out reminder letters (either every 12 months or 2 years depending on the patient type), nothing fancy just something simple to use, i was thinking about creating a database but would have no idea once i had got past creating the tables as im not a database guy, he is not IT friendly so was hoping for very basic/simple system

does anyone know of anything that might do or would know how to create a database to do this?

Microsoft Access. This should be very straight forward and will be plenty of tutorials on how to do it online, but ultimately he should invest in some proper software.
I am sure some folk on here could help out, it is simple enough it is just finding the time.

Alternatively he could just use Google Calendar. Store the customers details as Contacts in a Gmail account, reference them on the Calendar with reminders which he can set. The reminder can have the details of the customer so no need to go trailing through the contacts. Only problem with this however is it will need to be online most of the time.

Or he could use something like zoho, they do a free and a paid for version.
