Nokia has finally announced the Windows Phone 7.8 update for WP7 devices will now be officially rolling out. The update has been long awaited by many and caused quite a stir when they appeared last month on some online forums. However today, we have the official builds being seeded directly by Nokia’s own servers to its devices.

Back last year, when Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8, many users of the Lumia devices suffered a great let down when they found out that their newly bought phones would not be part of the upgrade plan. However, Microsoft assured the people that it was committed to the Windows Phone 7 OS, and would continue to support it. With that, they announced Windows Phone 7.8, an update that would cosmetically unite the two factions of their mobile operating system. With WP7.8, users get to enjoy resizable live tiles from the newer OS along with re-branding of Zune to Xbox Music and the new Xbox Games icons have been changed, plus the Bing lock screen wallpaper feature. If you’re looking for an official statement on what’s being packaged into this update, here is a list from the two parties involved:From Microsoft:
    • New homescreen experience with more room for your Live Tiles. Now resizable.
    • Set the Bing image of the day as the Lock Screen wallpaper.
    • Pocket and child Lock screen Security
    • 20 new accent theme colours

    From Nokia:
    • Bluetooth Share (for DRM free media files)
    • Cinemagraph add-on to create blend and photo and movie-like animation, creating photos that are alive
    • New camera lenses to remove unwanted objects in your photos such as passers-by or people on the edge of the shot the spoil the photo.
    • Updated Contacts Transfer application
    • Updates Contact Share application
    • Ringtone Maker application

The update has just begun rolling out, but it is possible that it may not yet be available in your particular region. When it does become available, your phone will show a notification and you can then proceed to update the phone through the Zune software. Currently the Windows Phone 7.8 update supports Lumia 900, 800, 710, 610 and 510. http://www.thinkdigit.com/Mobiles-PD...-78_13277.html

I got it, using the network disconnect trick. Had to use it for all 3 updates, as there are 3 of them. Nice facelift, that's about it

    Flight mode:
1- Connect your Windows Phone to a PC and launch the Zune software
2- Click on Settings/Update. Allow the software to tell you whether an update is
available. If so, skip this guide. If not continue to the next step.
3- Click the check for update button again, and this time immediately disconnect
your computer from the internet. Do this by pulling the Ethernet cable, disabling Wi-Fi, etc. ( I have just disabled the Ethernet adapter) But you should this as soon as the update starts, as your procedure will take some time!!!
4- You should receive a notification that an update is available.
5- Now reconnect to the internet and continue with the update process through the Zune software.
“If I asked you to have sex with me, would the answer to that question be the same as the answer to this question?”

It's an easy trick to force an update to your phone. Using the Zune desktop (connect your phone), go to 'Settings' and 'Update'. Here Zune starts checking whether there is an update for your Phone or not. After about 3 to 8 seconds, disconnect your network and wait untill your computer says 'Update found' (might take up to a minute or so). Then plug the network back in and start updating.

Like I said didnt work on mine. Tried it at home now as well and no dice.

Even read somewhere you need to put the handset in flight mode, but still no luck.

Maybe I'll just wait. (hates waiting)

Have an O2 Lumia 800 here that's currently successfully updating to 7.8 as we speak using the method above...

After much messing about. I finally got the phone to update using the disconnect "trick"...

Did three updates. Third one being the Windows Phone 7.8 one. Then after a fourth Nokia update was found and installed.

You have to be patient with the disconnect trick. Best method I found was to time how long it taks to check for updates about 5 times. Then take an average of that and then do it one more time and disconect about 2 seconds before that average. Worked for me. Obviously as well kill everything else that is likely to use the internet connection on your PC. Like browsers and shit.

Must have got lucky - worked first time for me! Didn't get any updates after the Windows Phone 7.8 on mine though - any ideas what the final Nokia update did?

I am on O2 but I still not got the upgrade and unlike flipper, the disconnect method hasn't worked and I have given up trying it as so hit and miss. Anyone else on O2 had the official update?

You really are not missing much aside from the re-sizeable tiles...

The disconnect trick will work if you keep trying. Took me a while to get it, but it does do it in the end. Just do what I posted above to time the disconnection.

depends a lot on connection speed I hear tho and our work is 30mb synchronous so the time it takes to check is a lot quicker at home I only got 8mb/512 so a lot slower but still got to hit it on the money for it to work. I am really after the kids corner part of the update.

Right, one of the four bastard updates has fucked up audio playback through headphones.

The sound volume is HALF what it was before. From reading online it's the last nokia update that does this, so don't install that one if you want to listen to music on headphones properly.

No fix for it yet that I have found... Dunno if deliberate, due to some legislation or a fuck up be it on purpose or not.

    Annoying...
