What lenses are you using mate? You may get better results just by getting better lenses. We took my daughter for her first photoshop and the bird was using a D3100 with a Sigma lens and the quality was brilliant!

It might be worth checking out a prime - I picked one up from Argos - just the 50mm one but I love the portrait pics it takes!

The 35mm is ideal for the D3100

You'll be pleasantly surprised with the exposure time when using a prime, much faster than the 18-55mm You have to use it differently though, as in you have to move about for composing rather than use the zoom

to be honest I do that anyway. I very rarely use the zoom on the 18-55

you should use the zoom! you get a different image at 55mm than if you just walked forward with the camera set at 18 to create the same scene.

If you current camera is 3 years old then I would say maybe go up to the 5XXX, technology has moved on but dont expect miracles, personally I'd go for something higher. I am not sure what Nikon do at the lower DXXX range now, but you will see much more difference in the cameras performance if you go up to that range. The D610 aint that expensive...treat yourself

Ill try a few shots with the zoom this weekend then. I think the d5300 is my next. Just looked at the d610 and I don't think the missus would be happy if I bought it!! haha

The D610 is a full frame camera.

The ones you have been using are I think a 1.6 cropped sensor. This means that a 35mm lens us actually about a 50mm lens and a 50mm is actually an 85mm equivalent.

It does not make much difference to the use just be aware that if you got the D610 and used the same lens you would get different framing and crop.

I am just about to sell all my Nikon stuff and move to fuji. Mostly because of the weight of the kit.

Prime lenses are much better and sharper but you have to think a bit more and zoom with your feet.

The answer is one of practical rather than personal choice. The fittings are proprietary. Nikon lenses don't fit or connect with Canon bodies.

Once you invest in one brand it becomes very expensive to switch and start over from scratch with the other because they don't work with competitor's products... except maybe the filters.

I use Canon because the entry level gear is advanced and very easily configured to requirements like Android, whereas Nikon is like Apple: they do things their way and you have to buy extras to get it to work the way you want it to and Canon comes with brilliant free software and Nikon is optional extra that never comes with the camera. You have to buy the RAW edit software.

Surely you do not use the manufacturer software though. There is far better stuff out there.

Photoshop and Lightroom proper licenses are only £8 a month. Well worth it if you are taking things seriously.

I think he means the remote software. The EOS utility software comes free with Canon cameras, you need to buy the Camera Control Pro software for Nikon cameras.
