Help 17 Imac installing OS problem

I have have another imac which had no hard drive, installed a new drive and when i boot ( have an orginal snow lep disc) the mac wont boot from disc, tried the press c while it boots but still get the face/folder icon.

tried to boot pressing ALT and i get 1 icon with like a half circle and another with an arrow facing right, clicking either dosnt seem to do anything

I dont have a mac keyboard but have searched the tinterweb for the pc alternative keys.

will they only boot from setup discs? will have to have tiger os if shipped with that?

all new to macs so not very clued up.

if theres a mac guy in Leeds fancies helping me out i can offer some beer tokens

    Consoles.

edit: is there a special start up disc i need?

Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking

Is it a retail copy of snow leopard or an install disk off another machine (is it grey or does it have a picture of a snow leopard on it)

It sounds like the optical drive is not working too well mate, when you hold alt you should see the CD as a selectable device to boot to.

If you have another mac and a firewire cable, boot the 17" and hold T, you should see a firewire logo bounce around the screen, connect to other mac with firewire cable and then you can boot other mac to os install cd and install to the hard drive of the 17" once you format it in disk utility

it's a retail copy os Snow Leopard re: pic of a leopard on the disc. I can hear the drives reading the disc ok, but not getting the screens you describe.
I dont have another Mac to try the T method.

With the OS disc in the drive this screen below is what is gives booting holding ALT.

I'm using a Windows KB will this make any difference?

I suspect you have a G5 iMac, which means you won't be able to use Snow Leopard.

Try grabbing a copy of Lepoard Retail from somewhere and burn it.

TransMac (trial) will burn a Mac .DMG image to DVD on a PC, from memory the Leopard disk is dual layer.

think I can get away without one, place I bought them from is sending me a couple on monday, ive been reading tons of forums etc and found a good site which explains the alternative keys to press if not using a mac keyboard which seems to work.

thanks for the offer though mate.
