I finally got bezels working in MAME.
Very pretty on my 50" 1080p plasma:

It really adds to the nostalgia and makes the games more fun.

andy262000 (18th April 2013), beansontoast (12th April 2013), crazyal (14th April 2013), Goldberg (18th April 2013), WRATH OF BOD (14th April 2013)
That looks really smart.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...
XBMC? I don't have that. I use the MAMEUI varient of MAME. It is pretty easy to set up apart from one thing ... getting the scaling/scanlines perfect (i.e. not blurry, and scaled in exact proportions). They are perfect, for my taste anyway, in the screenshots I posted. But it took hours of fiddling with MAME to get to that point. For me, anyway.
For each game you want to give a bezel, just make folder structure as follows in MAME's artwork folder using the same name as the ROM (in this case, sf2ce):
- \mame\artwork\sf2ce\default.lay
This is just a simple text file (XML formatted) to tell MAME the size of your bezel image, and the size and position of the gap you want to use as the game viewport.- \mame\artwork\sf2ce\sf2ce_bezel.png
This is the bezel image itself.
Then make sure bezels are enabled (while running a game, press tab, then choose Video Options, then select "Upright Artwork").
I took some bezels from http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php then adjusted them to best fit my screen (1080p). If anyone wants them just PM me, I couldn't find a decent place to upload them (about 1.5MB each).
I tried about a year ago and just couldn't get bezels working for some reason but today I tried and it seemed to work first time.
