THIS is the shocking moment a Newcastle United fan appeared to punch a police horse yesterday afternoon.

Toon thugs clashed with cops after their side were thrashed by local rivals Sunderland 3-0 at home.
One tubby hooligan was spotted on camera swinging a fist towards the animal.
The yob, who tried to disguise his identity by covering his face in a team scarf, is shown standing calmly before raising his fists and delivering the blow.
But he was tackled by riot cops immediately after and brought to the ground.

The horse, name Bud, belongs to West Yorkshire Police and was on duty as extras forces were brought in for the Tyne-Wear derby.
The force said Bud wasn't hurt in the incident, and even tweeted a picture of him eating out of his feed bag this morning.
The account @WYPHorses, said: "He is safe and well, eating and going out in the paddock in a few minutes."

Mounted police battling to shield those being targeted were pelted with bottles, stones and flares.
Wheelie bins were set on fire — and the city’s train station had to be locked to keep the mob out.

Police in riot helmets had their horses spooked by firecrackers. One cop was rushed to hospital amid the violence. A horrified colleague said: “This is the worst rioting I have seen in the city centre for decades.”

Admittedly football has more than it's fair share of arseholes but that shouldn't put you off a sport that's one of the most loved.

This thug is obviously an arsehole whether he likes football or not, he's probably the sort of person that would have done the same in the riots a couple of years ago where there was no sign of football.

true but as far as I know violence is usually prepared for and UK towns have to be heavily policed whenever there is a match on. This alone to me seems like a big problem and just shouldnt be fucking happening.

What about in the rest of europe where football is as much of a way of life as it is here, is there similar problems.

Trouble with giving the police more powers is that some of them will abuse it and innocent people would end up suffering from police brutality.

They should make the clubs that can't control the crowd play behind closed doors for six months. Without the gate takings we may see the players wages reduced to a more realistic and publicly acceptable level. The players themselves may then learn to behave and stop setting a bad example for the fans. (">
