Teamveiwer is a client and sever program in one. No ports needed to be configured or opened and includes free file transfer. Starting out - highly recommended.

I use LogMeIn and would heartily recommend it. I wouldn't advise opening 3389 for RDP unless you can firewall it to a known external IP, just opening it to the world will provide a honeypot that hackers can just hammer away at. There have been a few vulnerabilities identified with RDP over the years so better to avoid it if you can, LMI has a completely free version that works perfectly for most uses. Go for that.

I've used Logmein and Teamviewer and both are very good.
I've also used some port forwarding (pick a random external port not 22) on my Router which is forwarded internally to a SSH daemon running on one of my devices, then using SSH tunnelling I can access RDP or VNC installed on the local machines. But as mentioned above this still opens up the possibility of someone trying to hack the SSH daemon.
