    Default Accessing PC

I have a microserver running windows 7 and its always on.

I'd like to be able to access my files and folders when at work and out, I set up a VPN but when connected i can't access either the web or my files.

    Can anyone help me out?

I use Teamviewer or Remote Desktop. Just need to open the port for Remote Desktop.

Teamviewer worked perfectly from Greece today and file transfer is included with the free version.

How did you set up the VPN? I had to config a fair few things to get VPN on a RRAS Dial-In interface working on a N40l server. Remote desktop is the easier way but if you want just file access on a ipad etc. it works better using a VPN as Teamviewer on the ipad/iPhone is a nightmare.

    Thanks to evilsatan

very easy and very similar to TeamViewer, i use Logmein every day to connect to my servers at home but i do all file transfers via FTP as i think you need the PRO version to do file transfers on logmein, its free tho (not PRO)

TeamViewer is okay. Sometimes won't connect though. Logmein.com is better, but doesn't have free file transfer.

If you are after just streaming media, then maybe look at plex.

I use logmein normally for accessing my PC from another PC.

I also use it on my Galaxy Note phone however for some bizarre reason, it refuses to work on my Nexus 10. Teamviewer works perfectly though.

I followed a video on YouTube which involved opening a pptp port on my router.

At work I have a z drive on my computer which when I click on allows me to access files on London office server. I just wanted to try something similar with my work computer accessing my home one.

Can you compare your method to this guide for me:
    http://www.thomasmaurer.ch/2010/10/h...erver-2008-r2/

Do you have static IP at home or are you using DynamicDNS?

    Thanks to evilsatan

My mistake, my guide was for Server 2008 r2, I read you had a microserver and missed the Windows 7 bit. Have you setup folder sharing?

RDP (rempte desktop) mate open port 389 on you router, set an ip address or multiple ip addresses that you may access your machine remotely from in your firewall rules and there you go.

Or like others have said logmein is pretty simple, just create an account install the free version and off you go from any browser.

    Thanks to chesser

Yes RDP is 3389. I'd probably use TightVNC though, or wipe MS and install a proper server.

Have you considered swapping Windows 7 for either Home Server 2011 or Server 2012 essentials? Each give you a portal you login to which you can access your files, rdp to any PC on your network and server 2012 will automatically set up VPN access.

    Thanks to beerman
