Sounds like a sweet setup. I might have to grab a Pi now and have a play with one... I've been meaning to for ages just I've never had time lol

guys your both missing out, its really nice once its setup properly and adding new stuff is so easy (the server will update the Pi library even if you are watching a film on it)
biggest problem you have is storing everything, especially if you want 720p or 1080p stuff and want to keep it (i rarely delete anything media wise)
if you need any help then just let me know and i will help where i can
edit: forgot to say that with the Pi you normally have to buy a remote control to go with it however if your TV is fairly modern then it will allow you to use the TV's remote to control Raspbmc, very handy are stops you having loads of remotes lying around

You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

I've gotta say it does sound attractive. I've always used WDTVs for streaming and though I do love them, the one thing that lets them down is the DB handling. I'm forever finding that they haven't gone and fetched the metadata for movies and that they're pretty slow to update... But that's got me wondering if it's possible to get my NAS box generating the data itself. The WDTVs store the info on the shares they access, so it might be possible to hack the code off an unlocked WDTV onto the NAS itself.

I looked into something similar a while ago mate, ThumbGen (http://thumbgen.org/) or WDTVHubGen (http://wdtvhubgen.codeplex.com/) were two options - need to have a play but they need to run on Windows.

Rasberry Pi running OpenElec is all you need for streaming videos I love it.
My setup has been toned down lots.
HP N40L Microserver with 250gb hard drive, 8gb RAM running Ubuntu for mail server, DNS, Plex Media Server, SABNZBD, CouchPotato and SickBeard - moving to a VM this weekend
WD MyBook 2tb NAS for storage
XBox 360 in bedroom 1
PS3 in bedroom 2
Raspberry Pi in Bedroom 1
LG Smart TV in Living room
PC in Bedroom 1 (for gaming)
Powerline ethernet
I used to have a stack of HP rackmounted servers but when I moved into my apartment I realised that a) they were too noisy and b) like fuck was I gonna carry all that crap up two flights of stairs!

I'm thinking of building a 24 bay hotswap ESXi NAS. Do you think this is overkill for a home setup?

Doh! Quoted myself instead of editing post. Is there any way to delete a post from tapatalk?

My planned ESXi build at the moment, but I want the build to draw as little power as possible!
Case: Norco 4224 - Now to find the 120mm fan plate
Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O
RAM: 2x 8GB KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230
Power Supply: Seasonic X-750 Gold
SATA Expansion Card(s): 3x IBM M1015 - Purchased: £261.37 New
Cables: 4x 3Ware Multi lane SFF8087 - Sent wrong item, awaiting exchange.
Total Cost:
Hard Drives I already have:
Parity Drive: 2TB
Data Drives: 17x either 1TB, 1.5TB or 2TB
Cache Drive: 1x 500GB 2.5"
Total Drive Capacity: Unknown at present as it depends on the state of the hard drives I have
The primary uses of the new server will be:
- Computer backups (rsync)
- Web server (to test my websites before they go live)
- Virtual machine (so I can use Windows at university as it is all Macs)
- Film, TV, Music Storage
- XBMC server/streaming in my flat
- Run the usual addons to source content for XBMC (Media Center)
- And be able to run a Home Automation system.
Any ideas on how I can work out the power consumption?

Get one of those Owl power monitoring devices?
Some things I did to reduce my power consumption (all theory, not actually tested)
Install an SSD as the primary drive.
Used WD Greens for storage, made sure to set noatime and nodiratime (won't spin down otherwise).
Spin down all WD Greens when not in use.
Removed add-in graphics card from device and reverted back to on-board graphics.
Replaced smaller fans with larger ones.
Enabled C-States in BIOS.
Enabled fan power control in BIOS.
Installed GUI-less Debian Squeeze Linux.
Install powertop to see what was using power and make modifications to use less.

A lot more than my current setup at least. I'm currently looking at selling all of my drives in favour of 3tb WD Reds. That way I can keep power consumption to a minimum and buy disks when they are needed.
My current NAS is not man enough. Parity checks take ages and I can't install my M1050 to add a cache drive

I have a OWL meter reader as well my current setup uses around 33w. But it's not powerful enough for my current and future use, it takes 11 days to do a parity check!! ELEVEN DAYS!! Any upgrade suggestions?
I'm pretty certain that I am going to scrap the ESXi idea as I can use a Raspberry Pi for home automation (needs more research)....
Although I want a centralised server to handle everything in my future bungalow that I can hide away and run cables through the walls to each room in the bungalow and outside the bungalow... I want to be able to use one machine to do everything instead of using multiple machines unless that works out better.
I want to be able to have:
- Home automation including the garage/garden etc Update: Probably going to use Loxone + EnOcean
- Video/audio security system Update: Probably going to use Loxone + EnOcean
- Fully automated computer/laptop backup system; rsync
- Expandable audio/visual storage
- Bungalow wide audio/visual streaming
I'm not sure whether I should start my centralised server setup now. But as I have the cash spare now I am thinking yes, as I will not have the cash when I buy/build my own bungalow!
What do you think?

How are your drives configured? The 4 four way SATA adapters would suggest that you've got two plugged into a single M1015, 8 drives on that channel would mean you've got about 96MBps to each drive when they are put under full load. I'd guess they're prob rated up to about 150MBps so a bit of a bottleneck there if you have.
Also, if you have one RAID volume that spans multiple M1015s the speed generally drops to the speed of the slowest member. When you're checking parity then everything is going to be dependent on the throughput you can get to that single drive. If it's also on the M1015s then there's going to be a massive amount of traffic going through that one channel.
Another thing about a single RAID volume is that to calculate parity you're gonna have to read each disk before you can calculate your parity bit. So for every write operation, you'll need to do 16 reads to calculate parity. That's going to introduce a lot of latency.
Another thing I'd look at is the oomph that the M1015s have got. It may well be that the processor on those can't keep up with the RAID calculations.
What sort of budget do you have to play with?
My current build 12Tb File Server: Fractal Design Array R2, Intel D510MO / D510 Intel MN10, 4Gb DDR2 800Mhz uses a unknown PCI four port SATA card. I haven't put my M1050 in here.
Budget is no more than 1k at a push... My biggest concern is energy use/waste.
