    Default Network Security/Connections (Advice Please)

    Hi Peeps

    Really after some advice please.

My current ISP is Virgin and I have their Super Hub and off of that I have a Synology Nas and iOmega Nas both connected via cables. Connected via wireless I have a couple laptops and two iphones. I noticed today on a laptop using Windows 8 when I checked Network that intermittently I have a Nexus 7 shown as a computer & a Samsung GT-I9300 shown as a Phone connected to my Laptop/Network?
I have an app on my iPhone which searches your networks and this showed nothing unusual??? Both devises connected to my networks had their mac codes shown and I don't own any of these items.I checked the hub and nothing untoward was shown and the log didn't display any of the these devices being connected.

I have now uninstalled Mcafee and now installed AVG free thinking its was their firewall settings, but these items are still on my network with Windows managing my firewall as well. I have now disconnected both Nas's and they still show up on my network on the Windows 8 Laptop with nothing else connected.

Can anyone explain what's going on please? Should I be worried? I tried another laptop using Vista and this displayed nothing to cause any concern.

    Thanks

There's a wps flaw (and some people say you can't even disable it on the "super"hub) http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...EN/td-p/954273

Best bet is to put it in router mode and use another wifi router.

Have you owned these phones in the past? Are they phones of friends or family who have used your wifi in the past?

Sounds like they are wireless / bluetooth devices that your laptop can 'see' and could connect to if you wanted to.

If there is a flaw with the Super Hub wouldn't if show up on any of the other devices as well including when I use the app on my iphone?

    Thanks for your reply.

Now that seemed to make sense to me who's a little slow on the IT front although I cant find when I enable bluee-tooth on another laptop? Will now just monitor this as is before I buy another router as I sold a brilliant Billion unit recently inplace of the SuperHub which t appears is full of glitches????

    Thanks for your reply

That phone is owned by someone called m0xx, as you can see.
I'd disable WPS on the superhub just in case, and then change you wifi password just to be sure.

    Thanks to muttleymacclad

    Hi

I changed the password, WPS pin and the firewall settings to medium security (from low default setting) and it was still shown on my network.

What would you suggest I use as I currently connect using WPA2-Personal AES.

    Thanks

Changing the wps pin doesn't really make any difference, ideally you'd disable wps as this is the weak point in your set up.

You've done the right thing regarding the rest of the security. The phone will still show up as a networkable device. Are you able to delete it from devices?

How far do you want to go with this? Ideally you want to turn the superhub into modem modem and hook up another wireless router or you can disable wifi completley or you can disable dhcp and assign a new range in your superhub settings but this means giving connected to your superhub a static ip.

    Thanks to Sanj[UK]

On the superhub, go to -

    advanced settings >> ip filtering

Do you see the other 2 devices? you can disable their internet connectivity there

wps is the weak point so disable, but as said there's rumours that with the superhub the menu option to disable doesn't actually do that. You'll also need to change your wpa password too.

I was unable to delete the devices as no option was given.

Maybe that's what I need to do although I was thinking of only allowing certain devices to connect using their specific MAC Codes, although this would make little difference as they were shown as a network device on the laptop but not connected to the router so Windows seems to be the weak point???

Now this is what I don't understand, they were not shown as connected on the Superhub but just on my Laptop.......

    Thanks again all.
