    Info TEMPLE STAKES TRENDS 2013

The Betfred Temple Stakes is a group 2 sprint over 5F, which takes place at Haydock on Saturday, 25th May. Prior to 2008 the race was run at Sandown. In the past 5 years it has been won by the likes of Fleeting Spirit, Kingsgate Native, Sole Power and Bated Breath.

Below we take a look at the trends for the past 10 years:

    Age

    3yo: 2-1-18

    4yo: 3-2-22

    5yo: 3-4-21

    6yo: 0-5-24

    7yo+: 2-7-21

The ages of the winners have been fairly well spread out over past 10 years.

Both winning 3yos were fillies that had finished in first 2 in Cheveley Park Stakes last time. All three 3yos to make the frame were female.

Both winners aged 7+ came from the David Barker yard.

    Gender

Fillies & mares (4-3-22) have won 4 of last 10 from just 20.8% of total runners.

Record of female runners priced 10/1 or lower: 1L9231511 (4-2-9)

    Weight

Penalty structure for this race has changed, formerly winners of a group 2 received a 4lb penalty and winners of a group 1 received a 7lb penalty, now only group 1 winners are penalised to the tune of 4lbs.

    Horses carrying a group 1 penalty: 10850 (1-0-5)

    Horses carrying a group 2 penalty: 7585217 (1-1-7)

The only 2 winners that managed to carry any sort of penalty were both 3yo fillies, who were receiving age and gender allowances.

    Recent/Past Form

4 of 10 winners were making their seasonal debut (all 4 had finished in first 2 in group 1 sprint the previous season)

5 of 6 winners to have run that year finished in first 4 last time, posting RPR of 104+

8 of 10 winners had won over 5F (2 exceptions had finished in first 2 in a 6F group 1 in past 2 runs)

All 10 winners had won over 5 or 6 furlongs

7 of 10 winners (last 5) had won a listed or group sprint

5 of 10 winners (last 3) had finished in first 2 in a group 1

3 of 10 winners ran in previous King Georges Sprint, finishing 781

2 of 10 winners ran in previous season's World Trophy, finishing 84

    Trainers

Eddie Lynam (1-1-2) has saddled Sole Power to finish 1st & 2nd in last 2 renewals.

Royal Charlton (1-0-1) trained Bated Breath to win this last year.

Robert Cowell (0-2-4) has saddled a placed finisher in each of past 2 runnings.

Kevin Ryan (0-2-8) has also filled a couple of placed finishers since 2003.

Draw (based on 5 runnings at Haydock)

    Horses drawn 1 to 5: 5-4-25

Horses drawn 6 or higher: 0-6-29

All 5 winners of this at Haydock were drawn in stalls 1 to 5.

    Price

8 of 10 winners (last 7) were sent off 8/1 or shorter

Favourites (4-4-12) have won 4 of last 10 & show a level stakes return of zero over past 10 years.

    Summary:

Based on the trends from the past 10 years you are looking for a horse:

    · Female runners do well (especially 3yos that’d placed in a group 1)

    · Having first run this season or finished in first 4 last time, posting RPR of 104+

    · Has won over 5F (or finished in first 2 in a 6F group 1 in last 2 runs)

    · Won a listed or group sprint

    · Previously finished in first 2 in a group 1

    · Ran in Nunthorpe, King George Stakes and/or Golden Jubilee in 2012

    · Finished in first 4 in Palace House and/or Cammidge Trophy in 2013

    · Drawn 1 to 5

    · Priced up 8/1 or shorter
