    Help HP ProLiant G7 N54L 2.2GHz MicroServer

i've just taken the plunge and bought HP ProLiant G7 N54L 2.2GHz MicroServer.
while i'm waiting for delivery i just have a couple of questions:
which OS, can anyone recommend which one to install?
NAS resources, can some good ones be suggested for reading up on setup tips, suggested apps to install etc?

    thanks in advance,

    gazza

It all depends on what you want from it. If you want simplicity and a recognisible gui go with Windows Homeserver 2011 or Server 2012 Essentials.
I use server 2012 essentials and have it set up with Sabnzb, sickbeard and couchpotato serving up the content to my media centre.
Homeserver 2011 and Server 2012 essentials will also back up your windows PCs.

    2 Thanks given to beerman

Both WHS 2011 and Server 2012 essentials set up a website that you can login to and remote to your PCs/download your files/stream your media.

Not sure, I have no use backing up anything other than windows based PCs so haven't explored this.

so does server 2012 give any performance or benefit over 2011 for a home/office/media server point of view ?

any deals on 2012 and anyone running test versions that dont expire

anyone running a extra video card in it for 1080p streaming ?

You may see a slight speed increase over Homeserver 2011 but not much to shout about.

In my old one I used an ati 5450 for 1080 videos, I don't need one in my new server due to having a dedicated media centre.

I don't think home server supports hyper-v, although you wouldn't be able to run loads of vm's with 8gb anyway.

    Not lame unless you know

You got it anyway, unless you are going to be running XBMC (or whatever flavour of media software) on the N54l then you won't need the graphics card all the processing will be done on the media PC, the server is just serving up the file. I haven't even got mine connected to a screen. I just remote desktop if I ever need to login directly to the server.

    Aye, server 2011 is limited to 8GB I believe. I have 16GB in my N40l running 2012.

XBMC is a front end you wouldn't need to install it on the server to see your files. Each library is local on the PC xbmc is installed on unless you want to set up a SQL DB to unify the libraries so when you watch it on one PC the watched status gets updated across all PCs.

    Btw, check your PMs

Edit - lol, same as above!

You don't need to run Xbmc on it, if you set up MySQL, this can hold the media library.

You'd also have your media files on there.

Clients (running Xbmc) can connect and use the shared media & library. This will let you do the funky stuff like stop on one client & carry on from where you left off on another.

    Thanks to Conkers

If you are running 5 drives try and find a bios for the n54l that allows you to use the internal sata port at full speed. The n36 and my n40 both had the internal sata port crippled as it assumed you'd use it for a DVD drive. I had to flash a new bios that enabled the full speed.

If you can't find one you'd be better to use the esata port on the back and run a esata to sata to the drive.

With server 2012 the storage pools let you add to your pool or change a drive for larger etc and still have redundancy set up.

4gb should be ok but for the price of it you may as well get 8gb

Just bought one of these from ServersDirect. £204 + £9.95 shipping = £213.95. £113.95 after HP cashback. Seen cheaper elsewhere (ebuyer) but at least ServersDirect have them in stock so decided to go for it. (">

Velcro does just as good a job at holding the hdd firmly in the optical bay. It's not as if it moves around a lot.
