In news that will surprise few, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick doesn't think sales of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 will be especially dented by the absence of Xbox One and PS4 versions. "Grand Theft Auto V is the most highly anticipated release of our biggest franchise," he told MCV in a recent interview. "It features the largest, most dynamic and most diverse open world Rockstar Games has yet created. "The installed base of current generation consoles is estimated to be in excess of 120 million, and most of those consumers have been waiting for Grand Theft Auto V for years. Therefore, we expect there to be enormous consumer demand for Grand Theft Auto V regardless of when the next-generation consoles are released."
Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has also defended the decision to stick with current gen, from a creative standpoint - he argues that "there's plenty of power in these machines". What we've seen of GTA 5 suggests that power is being put to good use.
"Take-Two is in a stronger position than at any other time in our history," Zelnick observed in a separate MCV article from yesterday.
"We believe that our most successful times are ahead. Fiscal 2014 promises to be one of our best years ever, with the launch of GTA V. Our current outlook is for profits in fiscal 2015 and for the foreseeable future."
In news that will probably delight Microsoft's Xbox SmartGlass team, Zelnick also revealed that "mobile is an area of increased focus for us. Consumer consumption of interactive entertainment - particularly on tablets and smartphones - will increase."
Are you still holding out hope for a next gen GTA 5? Might want to snuff out that particular candle.
