Murdoch eyes Prisa TV
News Corporation is looking to enter the Spanish pay-TV market through a stake in Canal+, the Prisa TV operation, previously branded as Digital+. Prisa is in the process of selling its 56% share in the satellite platform to Telefónica. The telco already holds 22% of the platform and previously operated the rival Via Digital operation until its merger in 2003. Financial reporters suggest that News Corp has already made an approach to Telefónica, without whose agreement any News Corp involvement would be a non-starter.
Telefónica has offered €900 million for Prisa TV, a sum deem insufficient by Prisa, leaving the door open to third party bids.
News Corp’s expertise gained at BSkyB and Sky Deutschand may be welcome at Prisa, which lost 28,350 satellite subscribers in the first quarter, and has seen a gradual subscriber erosion in recent quarters. It currently has 1,691,281 subscribers, though has benefitted from deals with ADSL and cablenets.
