surely you cant rule out a painting of a photograph on the grounds that the same effect is possible in photoshop, photoshop is replicating the effect of a painting in the first place, not the other way around.
On that logic whats the point in any reality based painting at all, after all you can get a better image easier by just taking a photograph.

If you are looking at a subject or even photograph and painting freehand (better still from memory) a large degree of talent is required and an element of interpretation introduced, tracing (from projection or otherwise) is a draughtsman skill. I guess my analogy would be that you might attribute the same talent to someone making a copy of an existing recording, even if they play around with the sound a little the talent was in writing the piece, playing the instruments, singing, really a staggering difference between the two.

If that's true then it's a little less dubious though I would rather see him creating his OWN images from looking at many pictures, NOT reproducing the work of a Photographer.

I could say that about dozens of threads here. But... I don't. Because not all the threads have to meet my approval. That is the beauty of a message forum.

Well its had 49 replies.... 50 now with this one. You're just miffed that he hasn't chosen to be inspired by one of your photographs, which I think are truly awesome by the way. And anyway, even if it is boring, I'm so busy most days that its nice to be involved in something boring for a change. (">

Just digging up this thread, my mate has continued with his paintings and yesterday took an order for an Evil Dead painting from the actor Bruce Campbell himself, he is well chuffed obviously from an artists perspective and film fan.

A friend of mine recently started painting again, he started when he was in school but life soon took over and he found he didn't have time to do it as much with work and kids and what not.
He will go and take photos of his subjects (usually friends animals or some of Wild Bird collection) he then paints them freehand using the photos for reference.
Here are a few of the pieces he's done

^^ Now they are both very cool
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.
