Why Xbox One doesn't ship with an official headset
In news that'll probably rile those already riled by Xbox One's £429 UK pricepoint, the console doesn't ship with a headset as standard. Microsoft has now released a statement via Ars Technica addressing this. It shouldn't surprise you all that much. "Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory," the statement acknowledges, but adds "each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. "For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire." Microsoft has yet to announce pricepoints for said variety of offerings.
A big hand to Eurogamer, bastion of British eccentricity, for passing this on. One of the latter's readers points out that the Xbox One headset uses a proprietary jack, which means you won't be able to plug in any old set of cans.
The headset is described in official marketing materials as "a must-have for fans of online gaming" that's "designed for long gaming sessions and clear voice chat". "With a lightweight and comfortable new design, the mono chat headset features wideband digital audio and a unidirectional microphone," it continues. "Gamers will love not having to take their hands off the controller to access the microphone mute and volume controls."
A thought from this end: I can understand Microsoft deeming the headset unnecessary, given Kinect 2.0's rather stonking capabilities, but I also don't want Modern Warfare trashtalk coming through my speakers. That's the kind of thing that scars household pets for life. What do you think?
