Assassin's Creed 2 - often argued to be the franchise's finest hour - is now free to download for Xbox Live Gold subscribers on the Marketplace. The file's 4.59 GB in size. In case you're unfamiliar with it - that's a mighty impressive rock you've been hiding under, by the by - the game stars latter-day assassin Desmond Miles in the virtual guise of Ezio Auditore, his roguish Italian ancestor, and sees you exploring various breath-takingly realised Renaissance cities in search of Templar conspiracy. Our 2009 Assassin's Creed 2 review hailed it as "involving, exciting, cinematic - but there's one word that sums it up beautifully. Killer." I'll go add it to our continually updated list of free Xbox games.
Microsoft announced the two free games a month offer at this year's E3. It'll run to the end of the year at least - that's one free game on the 1st, another on the 16th of every month - but Major Nelson has suggested that it could extend into the life of the Xbox One.
