I think when people want quick results they get bored. You just have to realise it takes time to build up and go farther/longer.
The only discouraging thing is calorie loss. As you get fitter you have to work harder to burn off the same calories that you were burning off for doing half the distance previously.
But on the other side of that coin, it proves your fit! You don't have to look physically fit if you are cardio fit.

I couldn't agree more guys and the one thing is I'm really enjoying both the bike and the running. I'm determined to get fitter but I know I have to put the effort and the miles in to get there.
If I wasn't enjoying it I don't think I'd last but I've got in the habit of going out every day on the bike so it's weird now if I don't.

It's funny how people say 'I Don't have time to {insert whatever here}' and we are all guilty of it. But once you get your routine going you cannot understand why you didn't do it sooner.

I do think it's easy not to bother, especially after a hard day's work. I find that an hour on the bike gets rid of the day tho and refreshes me rather than drains me.
My missus encourages me too, tells me I will regret it if I don't go out and she's right. I'm always glad I've been, even if it's been hard work.

It kills me if I have to miss a morning (very very very very very rare) and I see people out running!
On the other side though, when I am up at 5:30, out and a big run later back, fed and showered I feel really smug when I am enjoying the rest of my day and see people only doing theirs at 1pm etc..
I used to also be one of those really funny guys who would shout 'go on fatty!' when I saw an overweight guy jogging. Now however I am very encouraging and think 'go on you!'
It does annoy me though when I see people in full tracksuits/sweat shirts.. It would kill me if I had to run in something like that! Not enjoyable.

I get the odd comment because I'm far from a natural athlete but I don't care. They're really healthy sat in their cars with a fag on the go. At the end of the day I am doing it for me and my family, not them.
This evening's 16 mile bike ... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/359885289
Very similar to Wednesday, took ages to get going after the run and a day's work on top but felt really strong towards the end

That's insane mate
maltloaf (17th August 2013)
Well, I was about 23 miles short of last week's mileage total so I set out to do that. When I'd got back close to home the first time I was about 8 miles short so I went out on another little loop to do that, then I found myself at 28 miles and you're not going to leave it at that when 30 is just around the corner are you ? ;-) so I did a bit extra on the estate to top it off to 30 (and a bit).
I must admit I felt a bit smug when I caught some riders up and they were on 12 of 15 miles and I was on 25 of 30.
cheers,
malty

Wow, do any of the watches do live track?
I'm in boxted at the moment stopping at a friends. Just been for a 10km very slow pace at 5:45 average (my usual is 4:20/4:24).
Nice to run in the county though and nice, once uploaded, to have another location on the map.
Still probably going for my usual run tomorrow though as I was not happy at such a slow pace with him. Feels I didn't work hard enough.

The newest Garmin Edge bike computers do (the 510 and the 810) and I think the Fenix watch does.
The missus loves it, it's like F1 telemetry on her iPad lol.

Yep Monday blues are tough but you feel good afterwards.
Because of my (slow) run yesterday, I'm missing today. The main reason though is we have no hot water! Hopefully that will be resolved today.
Here is my run in boxted yesterday, take a look at the satellite view, it was epic!

I hear what you say about feeling great about getting a run out of the way early. I have done 40 mins exercise this morning and feel absolutely tip top.
I come into work and see everyone else looking dreary having rolled out of bed and into their cars and feeling generally down about everything. I'm raring to go !
Love it.

Good to see you are getting into the cycling Malty, you've done well.
I got a new bike recently, but living in a busy area my concern is that I'm not fit enough for road cycling - would hold up the traffic. If I could cycle on the pavements, I would.
Get out there and have a go. You won't know otherwise :-)
