    Default GPS cycle computers

    This mornings 17km run

12km was 4:44 which is slow! This was caused by trying to get across the road, bad traffic.

I managed just shy of three miles yesterday on the bike, pretty unfit but I'll try and do four later today.

I've found this website bang on for calculating distances and routes, almost exactly 5 miles to my work - http://www.gmap-ped0meter.com/

Thank you for getting this thread going,

I am no spring chicken now and don't think I would have ever considered doing anything until I started reading this.

So, first hurdle I fell at was thinking that others will laugh at me, you know, look at that podgy old cnut, wasting his time etc etc, to be honest that is still in my
mind but I am overcoming it a little.

second hurdle was "can I actually still manage it", well we will just have to suck it and see.

third hurdle is the one response everybody seems to come out with, "I don't have the time", this is a piss easy response and everyone agrees and accepts it as a perfect excuse.

So, I am sat here now typing this and looking out of the window, what have I done about it..??

Bike has arrived and I have set it up, fetched some clothing and some shoes (no lycra yet I am afraid), fit a garmin 200 and entered my details..

I am ready for the off, lol.. I am quite nervous, unsure, uncertain and I am shaking a little.. I am shitting myself to be honest.

Going to just try a few miles and see how I go, yes its not a lot but I have to find my limits and don't need to cause myself an injury trying to prove I am 18 again, so I will see you in a little while and I will be honest as lying is not going to help me nor will it help you lot help me either.

    see you soon.

2.69 mile, and I feel great..

lets see how I feel at work later lol.

Ok it was a short circuit I picked, uphill for over half of the way and downhill mostly for the rest, I am going to do the same course for a week and then extend it by about a mile on Monday, I don't want to put myself off by making it a chore and chucking it in after a week, I need it to be fun and enjoyable, also I have ordered some bottles and some tools/pump spare tubes but not got them yet so I am not straying to far till they come. Even with this short run I needed a drink but hey ho I should have them by the end of the week.

a few details about myself :-

    47 years old
    5' 6" tall
    14 stone 7pounds

    Distance: 2.69 mi
    Time: 13:03
    Avg Pace: 4:50 min/mi
    Max Speed:
    Avg Speed:
    25.7 mph
    12.4 mph
    Elevation Gain: 91 ft
    Calories: 202 C

    back on it tomorrow..

I seem to have faired well in that department, trendy seems to have replaced comfy over the years and time will tell weather I keep this on or go for a slightly wider model, I did get a full gel one on my last bike but it was too wide and made riding it harder work so I need to be careful this time.

You will get used to the saddle. Takes a little while but it will be comfortable soon.

Also, grab some of the cycling shorts with padding in. Sports Direct do Muddy Fox ones very cheap.

when I got into cycling last year, having never before owned a bike I found that my arse was in pain very quickly. I tried sitting a little higher, so the seat was on the back of my arse and i was sitting up slightly straighter and that seemed to help a little, but I think you do generally just take time to get used to it.

I've got some of the muddy fox ones, they were £9.99 from my local store. They are almost as good as my £40 in as far as I don't choose one or the other, just whatever comes to hand first.

The muddy fox shirts are great value too, I'm delighted with mine. Very similar fabric to the nike dri-fit range and they're only £7 each or something.

    http://www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox...lcode=63620522

The logo falls off after a couple of washes but who cares ? The shirt itself is faring well, I've done 200+ miles in each of mine.

I'm absolutely delighted that this thread is helping people to get out there. Good on you. It's too easy to find lame excuses for not bothering. I often feel like I can't be bothered but I always go and I always feel amazing afterwards.

Now to tonight's ride, legs felt like lead for the first 8 or so miles but after that it was ok. A slightly shorter ride than I have been doing and a bit slower than usual but it's a new route to me so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, especially with one eye on tomorrow morning's run.

I tend to sit really far back so it almost feels like you're behind the pedals and I push hard against the boney bit between my arse and balls. Helps with climbing hills as you can get some serious power in consistently.

I currently try and cycle around 150 miles a month, and use my phone and Strava to record everything.

I've been offered a Garmin Edge 705 with HRM strap and bike mount for £80, and I'm very tempted, as it would be nice to see where I am and how fast I'm going without stopping to take my phone out of my pocket every time! Has anyone got one and any opinions please? Cheers.

Thanks for the Muddy Fox recommendations, I'll be near a Sports Direct tomorrow and will pick up a pair of those and a bright top.

I'd have snapped his hand off for it when I was looking as long as it's fully functional.

When I started back with cycling I honestly thought I was happy with my phone running runkeeper but I couldn't go back to that now. I love my edge 510

Spot on, I've asked him to keep ahold of it until I get paid next week, AFAIK it's been well looked after as he doesn't go off road any more, lol!

I woke up this morning and wasn't up for the run at all. Got up and went out anyway and now I've done it I really enjoyed it. I feel absolutely great now and when I woke up I was feeling completely Bleurgh !

Actually a bit slower than Monday but since I didn't feel like it and still did it, it's another small victory for me.
