    Help Maltloaf's Cycling Journal

    Hi,

I've decided to buy a dedicated GPS bike computer. The iPhone has been great but I worry about battery and falling off with a £500 phone sat out front and all exposed !

I've done a ton of reading and after deciding against needing mapping so ruled the Garmin edge 800 out, I'm torn between the garmin 500 and the new garmin 510

The differences as far as I can see are that the 500 has a smaller grey scale screen, is a smaller unit and doesn't have any smartphone connectivity but does everything well and is widely used.

The 510 is larger, colour screen and will upload to a smartphone for broadcasting/updating etc but is around £70 more.

Does anyone have these or any other units and can recommend anything ?

Also any good deals about ? The cheapest I have found for both is at handtec. Roughly £130 vs £200 give or take.

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Thanks,

    Malty

I've got the Edge 500 and love it. I paid £135 for the unit plus heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor using Flubit.

i know it doesn't directly upload the data but it takes no time at all to plug it in and upload - I ddon't use the Garmin site, but Strava autodetects the new activities and uploads them.

It was matched from Amazon - the package is now £197 but when I got it a few months ago it was showing as £145, so might be worth just keeping an eye on it.

Just for a different point of view, how about a cheap second hand android phone like an old htc desire.

Would be peanuts to buy but still use all the gps apps etc.

No biggy if it gets smashed then either.

Tried the phone route. There's a thread elsewhere about it. I tried with a moto defy mini and it was ok but not great, GPS performance was patchy and the battery was ok but not amazing

Got Ron Carter a Edge 500 for his leaving present mate, he loves it and says battery life is excellent. I LOVE my edge 800 but it only has 15 hours continuous battery life.

I've just seen the 800 performance bundle on amazon for 260odd. bit of a stretch from the 130 I was aiming for but I'm tempted.

I wish I could find the 500 or 510 bundle at a decent price.

Im using a smart phone, in a cradle, with a tough case on it.

And a separate usb charger ( i charge it at home, it charges the phone on the bike)

Thing will last for days if need be.

As I said I tried my best with the smartphone route. I'm really happy with the logging and data but it would drain my iPhone 5 like a motherfucker (iOS 7 beta doesn't help). I can't be arsed with charging up and working out how to mount my proporta battery plus I don't really like my primary phone mounted on the bar at all.

I have a waterproof etc defy mini which only cost me £40 and I thought was going to be ideal, I sorted out a proper mount but it loses GPS lock for up to 30 secs here and there, so you end up with spurious data, odd speeds, low speeds, high speeds as it calculates where it thinks you have been etc.

I've decided I want something purpose made for cycling

I'm heavily leaning towards the edge 500 purely from a cost point of view. The smartphone bit of the edge 510 would be very nice but I don't think it's worth the +£70

    cheers,

    malty

Have to say the smart phone add on would be nice but not worth £70 IMO. I like to view my rides on the pc anyway

My bike is now on an indoor trainer since moving jobs, I get on it every other morning when I am not running.

When I was commuting I was looking at the 500 but when I did some research it turned out I could use my 405cx perfectly fine (with some add ons).

So, I go running every other day with my Garmin 405cx plus Heart Rate Monitor, then when I am not I have the bike kit (all wireless) on the bike that is detected by the 405cx and the watch automatically knows to put it's self into bike mode and will record cadence, rpm etc..

Really motivates you and the automatic upload to the computer and then to Garmin Connect is fantastic.

There is a Garmin Connect App now also so you can track everything on your phone once they have updated.

handtec let me down, unit was out of stock and they couldn't be bothered letting me know so I've had a refund from them.

Trying to find another seller now.

Can hardly believe it but after using a discount voucher code, Halfords are cheaper than ANY online store.

I'm collecting it from my local store on Thursday.

I will find the link but it was from Amazon, badboy bikes I think is the make. Cost about £65

It's a magnetic one but the resistance changer doesn't really work, I just use the bike gears.

You do need a trainer tyre, I split a brand new road tyre like a cock an not listening to the instructions!
