    Help Alternative to Mounts ???

    Hi guys,

As title is there a decent alternative to mounts.. IMHO mounts are utter shite! although they do have a place and that is what some people want is there really another cheap alternative...
Or is there a decent looking mount that I am missing ??

My mrs found these magnetic acrylic ones but the cost is too high. Any other ideas for the el cheapo end of photography ??

    Cheers all

isn't the make your own mounts link bod posted any good then? That's the method I have used for public display and its pretty standard for non glass frame mounting. Making your own is tedious though, especially if you are doing them in 10's and 20's. It's cheap too, I bought 4 A1 sheets of the card for a tenner last time I did some and I got the cutter and rule off ebay very cheaply.

What quantities are you looking for? one of the guys I shoot for can offer a 9x6 in a frame for £2 more than in a mount and he actually makes more money on that than he does putting them in a mount and he buys mounts at 5000 a time, he bought 4000 of the frames.

The problem is you needs somewhere to store those quantities but if all your doing is 20-30 every few weeks then it just isnt worth the expense, buy some very high end mounts and just put up with them. the cheap ones are a nightmate.

    What is your project here?
Are you "mounting" some personal prints for around the house?
    Are you selling your prints?
What kind of volumes are we talking?

I've never sold anything in massive volume myself. Purely because I don't have the time outside of my day job. But have sold at local events and cafes. I'm assuming you are selling these prints directly to people at local craft fayres and the like?

If so I'd recommend spending a bit of money producing high quality framed and mounted prints for display. If you produce a select amount of prints for every image you can really hike up the prices. For example your display one would be print 1or 20. You would then have the other 19 mounted in a simple white mount in a clear poly bag. Very easy to do working out at about £1.00 - £2.00 depending on print size.

You then have the opportunity to charge a lot for the professionally framed image on display and a lot less for the print on its own. Customers generally like to get it framed themselves (match the room etc) You can also offer the framing service yourself but I'd leave this to a local professional and again you can work out pricing for this yourself.

For mounts, bags and tape I've used these guys in the past. Delivery has always been prompt but customer service hasn't been the greatest with a few orders completely wrong. http://www.picturelizard.co.uk

Sorry difficult going on assumption to give any specific advice but hope this is of some helps. Unfortunaley there is no ideal cheap solution and everything needs at least a little outlay and time.

If selling online there are plenty of services where you can create your own website and custoemrs can order prints directly. These are generally printed by a 3rd party and you will receive a small cut. For example www.500px.com

    Thanks to deek0

Just checked out the site. Looks good. Some of the designer mounts look decent quality. But I'm struggling to find prices.

You need to get an account to get prices.. bit shit but luckily a friend has an account so I can get all the prices off him first before deciding on account or I could order through him if needed ...
