When I was a kid, there was an arcade game on Brighton Pier. It was an aerial gunnery game, where you peered through a viewfinder at an actual movie (in black & white!) of a German fighter plane coming in to attack. Superimposed (optically) was a set of gunsight rings which would move controlled by a gun handle & trigger underneath.
When you pulled the trigger there was a satisfying sound of machine gun fire. The challenge was supposedly to get the enemy plane in the centre of the sight ring to score/register a hit.
Now for the clever bit. The score counter was outside the booth, so could only be seen after the game was over. As I learned a long time later, while watching a mate, the counter would register an increased count whenever you pulled the trigger regardless of where the gunsight was pointing!!!!!!
And I used to think I was such a hot shot flier................
