Default Problem Updating New XP Install - With Solution

I set up a Dell laptop with an original OEM dell CD. Everything worked fine except the windows update website, although it appeared to be capable of pulling automatic updates.

Moved the drive to an IBM and obviously the OEM activation failed so it asked me for a license key. Popped one in, activated it and now Windows Update works fine!

Odd. I had a problem with windows update not working after restoring xp from an original disc. The problem was due to the install CD being XPSP2 and WU website doesn't support it anymore. You manually have to download SP3 and install that before the WU website will work. Well played MS lol

Forgot to note the error code I had, but it's the exact same error code you get for that issue.

Well that wasn't a complete success, managed to download a windows update update and the wga update, now it just hangs it the wga page.

However, if I click no, I can then get to windows update, and tbh the only reason I wanted to do this was to auto install a load of drivers and that's worked so I'm happy.

Sounds like a really similar experience I had recently re-building a bunch of Dell Latitude 110L's to give away at work.

After factory restore to XP SP2 they just really hated the WU website. SP3 sorted some out but not others. Resetting WU, rebooting, upgrading WU client wouldn't get some working... Others fixed themselves.

Gonna get even worse when they switch off the whole thing next year lol

5 months before it's dead so I can't imagine they'll put much effort into fixing it, if any...

Had the same symptoms with a customer's Asus laptop. Couldn't find CoA but she supplied original restore media so we used that. It had same symptoms as above but found out via mgadiag tool the preinstalled VLK had been blocked.

I'm getting loads of XP machines suffering from the 100% cpu usage by svchost.exe. Completely renders the pc unusable after about 3 or 4 minutes.

It's all to do with windows automatic updates and ie6 or ie8. Some have been fixed with patches but the last 2 needed ie8 re-installing and then the updates came down fine.

    Very annoying.

Attention Re: Problem Updating New XP Install - With Solution

Found a fix & its worked on 2 XP Machines Today.

Manually turn on Automatic UpdatesTo turn on Automatic Updates manually, follow these steps:
    1. Exit all programs that are running.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
    3. On the Automatic Updates tab, click Automatic (Recommended), and then click OK.
    4. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    5. Type wuauclt /detectnow, and then press Enter.

After you turn on Automatic Updates, wait one hour, and then scan for updates again.

after about 40 mins the yellow shield appears in bottom right corner, so restart pc then it will appear again & starts dowloading updates.

OK Here We Go Again, The Repair i did in my last post worked in a way, did the 1st 50 updates as it should then rebooted to do more, the update page hung & would not update again, left both machines on & left them for about 2 hours
the yellow shield appears again but hangs on 0% so i restart both machines again & shield re appears & starts downloading the rest of the updates, it deffo MS fucking with us...
