BBC News Sheppey crossing crash: Dozens hurt as 130 vehicles crash

Sixty people have been injured as more than 130 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes in thick fog on the Sheppey crossing in Kent.

Eight of those hurt in the collisions, which took place in thick fog, sustained serious injuries.
Ambulance crews said 35 casualties needed hospital treatment in what were described as "horrendous scenes".
The A249 bridge was closed for more than nine hours and reopened to traffic at about 17:30.
One witness said visibility had been very poor at the time of the crash but drivers were approaching the crossing with no lights.
Others at the scene described a mass of tangled cars, lorries, and a car transporter. Some reports said the crash went on for 10 minutes as cars continuously collided with each other.

The report made me laugh on YouTube. A copper said, something is the respect of...

"We are still trying to establish the cause of the incident"

I mean, really? Are you that blind? Try looking more towards the front!

Pop along to 3:13 and take in the great view of the "Arriva Transfer Vehicle" (Number 5) pointing in the wrong direction.
Handbrake turning a long wheel based van without damaging it is quite a feat in my book - or moreso, in fog, blocking both lanes is gonna cause a little bit of bother.
A couple managed to swerve or clip it (1, 2, 3 & 4). 6 might have come a little unstuck (the Focus), 7 (the Micra heap - probably driven by a teenager) shit a brick and slammed the anchors on... 8, 9, 10 and 11 paniced and the rest is (are?) history.

Why they snipped the roof off that Focus is beyond me though... Whiplash claim up!?

We can't see 1-3, how do we know they didn't cause the van to pull an evasive manoeuvre? Could have even been a pedestrian on the motorway as far as we know.

    Apologise.

I've watched quite a few of the videos trying to work out what happened from the 'lay of the land'.
I'm working on the assumption it was poor visibility, early morning and the fact that something/someone went awry on the bridge... pedestrian? Probably not.

In this video, you see cars 1-4 in front of the van all pulled to the side and quite spaced out, facing the right way - with hardly any damage (if any at all).

If it's not the Arriva Vans fault, he certainly would know the cause.
